About Jimmy

My path towards becoming an academic has been full of many career challenges. And as an adult, the interesting nature of the Universe has led me to pursue Physics learning in my personal time. I am also interested in tutoring Physics nowadays. Because a Teaching Credential for Physics at the High School level, is something I now wish to achieve with my life. This was not always so. I played JV and Varsity baseball in High School, and understand that Physics is not the necessarily the highest priority for most High School students. But I then went on to use the skills I learned from Physics to pursue a career in a different technical field. It has always been Physics though, from being inspired by heroes such as Buzz Aldrin, to characters like those played by Matt Damon in 20th Century Fox's movie The Martian, that I always return to my Physics roots.

I have a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Computer Science and 10 years of experience at the Higher Education level. This includes regularly working in teams and tutoring others in technical subjects, including Physics. My main area of expertise is in Mechanics, in which I have performed many laboratory experiments and taken many tests. The results of which have greatly benefited from working with peers. I have also been asked to assist students on many different occasions by the teachers and professors we had taken courses from. Because I was always quite confident in my abilities, I rarely asked for help myself though, which I now see as something that could have made a better difference in my life.

Now, after having attempted many and much more difficult problems at the University, I continue to believe that Physics is not an easy subject. It requires many different skills from English and Math, and obviously Science. It is thus de facto, core curriculum for anyone who wants to receive a Degree in a Science discipline. And although I have worked on many Physics problems over the years in school and from personal curiosity, I still cannot say that I can solve any Physics problem. Physics problems can look and seem different, even when some aspects seem the same. A contradiction it would seem. And we prove and solve problems without necessarily resorting to math some of the time. It is interesting to me the relative nature by which we are all effected by Science, and yet one may go their whole life without thinking about it in terms of numbers. To me, that is equivalent to watching a movie instead of reading the book.

I have worked with many different people on many different kinds of problems. Sometimes I have been the leader, and other times, not so much. But I know what I know, what I need to know, and when this knowledge applies to a particular problem. Through this process I can guage what others know, and I can reinforce others like yourself. And then you can go about solving the problem in any way you see fit, with the tools that you will have available to you.

You can know Physics too. You can find that more challenging problems typically borrow concepts from simpler ones, and that there is typically more than one way to reach the correct solution. So the important thing is your understanding of what you know about the problem, what needs to be known, and then going about applying this knowledge to the context of the problem.

I understand that everybody has moments that they're flustered or are maybe just not having a good day. I will contend that you must give yourself enough time to prepare to overcome these challenges. You must give yourself a chance to learn the material, and if you want my help, you must give me the chance to do so. Physics, entirely, is not an easy subject to learn. I want to help people that want to help themselves, and so I will be available to you when you want and need it.

My experience has been that the framework in the scientific method, mathematical proofs, solution analysis, and the exploration of new ideas, all have a well documented history in the discoveries of science in Physics. This is definitely true in other scientific fields as well, because of the very nature of discovery in the scientific method. Watching a problem being solved, and hearing the problem being worked through, are both very valuable activities for expanding your mind.

I can also evaluate the work you do on your own, and I will make a real effort to respond within four hours with a marked-up copy of your work. I know that just marking something wrong is not often enough to show you anything, so I will provide detailed notes. And if you need some real-time support, we can have an online session usually that same day. And if you are a local, we might be able to arrange a meeting somewhere also.

Will you know enough Physics to solve problems when you need to for your success? I would be happy to help you! I look forward to being the best resource for developing your Physics tool-set for a short while, before you become your own best resource.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have taken 3 College-Level Calculus-Based Physics Courses, I have a Bachelor's of Science Degree, and am working towards a Teaching Credential.
