Sacramento State (English)

Dear Prospective Students,
My name is Shawn S. I have had a passion for teaching ever since I was little. I work very well with students of all ages. I specialize in English and Literature. This was my major in college. While majoring in English in college, I had extensive classes that taught me how to writer papers, use correct grammar, and organize my thoughts in a proper manner. My approach to tutoring will use these skills I learned. I plan to work closely with my potential students, using many teaching techniques such as using flashcards, developing the students’ critical analysis skills through reading and writing, while using a one on one approach. My students will not have to worry about me being too strict. My students that I have worked with up to this point describe me as very helpful, informative, easy going, but tough enough to the point where I keep their attention.
I have a wide history of teaching, starting from when I was young. I am currently 33 years old and I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in literature and a Post Graduate degree in law. While in college, I tutored many young students. I helped young students of all ages with their writing skills, how to analyze texts, comparing and contrasting different points of view of authors, and how to present one’s ideas in a paper. Also, as well as working with college level students, I have worked with elementary school level students. I have helped students at the elementary school level with grammar, reading comprehension, and how to properly communicate their ideas through writing. Second, as I mentioned, I have degrees in literature in law. These degrees are relevant to my teaching because my literature background taught me the art of creative writing. I will use this to develop my students’ creative writing skills. My degree in law taught me the importance of technical writing, which entails communicating to the reader the information in a more efficient fashion. I am eager to teach, and have a lot of knowledge to convey to my potential students.
Thank you, Shawn

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
