About Dudley

I have been teaching computers at the basic and intermediate level for about seven years and I thoroughly enjoy it. Computers are an integral part of everyday life and I believe that computer knowledge is vital in the highly technological world in which we live. Those who are computer literate are the ones that will be more productive and will be the contributors to society in which they live.

My teaching involves lessons about the Windows Operating System (Windows 10), Office desktop applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), the Internet and Web, and e:mail. With the release of the Office 2007 version, Microsoft made a major architectural departure from the older versions. My tutoring involves showing the differences between Office 2013 and the older versions. The differences are huge and knowing how to use Office 2013 puts those ahead of others and more competitive.

My teaching style and philosophy are simple. Make both the tutoring and learning experience fun and exciting and with humor thrown into the process. Humor, I strongly believe, releases those chemicals in the brain that make intellectual endeavor highly productive. I also welcome the life experiences of students as it relates to the subject matter and I look forward to learning from them as well. We all have something to share and contribute and we are all students in this journey called life.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and a Vocational Teaching Credential issued by the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing authorizing me to teach computer technology.

I look forward to meeting you and to share my computer knowledge with you and to learn from you as well.

Regards,
Dudley J.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary education (K-6th) develops the educational foundation of the elementary school student. It is the basic building block towards what is to come in middle school, high school, and college.

It is at this critical time for a child to receive the basics of Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science curricula for success in the child's education.

Integrated in this curriculum is the basic techniques of reading and writing so very important throughout life itself. It is at the very heart of being a productive citizen.

Reading provides the student with critical thinking development, analysis, extrapolation, and finally to forming sound conclusions. Reading skills support the development of writing skills and together will give the child excellent communications skills.

The basics of writing include sentence structure, the parts of speech (noun, pronoun, adverb, verb, adjective, conjunction) and the basic parts of a sentence (subject, verb, and predicate). A very important component of writing is spelling words correctly. Grammar and punctuation are also important in skillful writing.

How all of these parts of writing come together comprise the language arts portion of K-6th grade education.

My experience teaching K-12 in a public school system qualifies me to offer tutoring services for Elementary (K-6th). I did this in the San Juan Unified School District in Sacramento, CA.

English

English is the universal language and knowing it in a bi-literate (writing and speaking) way gives the person a very well-rounded ability to communicate.

My approach is teaching the student the rules of the English language. Every language has rules that govern how that language is to be used correctly.

Writing in English, involves knowing how to spell, the use of grammar, the use of punctuation, and how to structure sentences effectively.

All of these different components will be covered in my tutoring of English.

I look forward to the opportunity to tutor you in the English language.

Regards,
Dudley J.

General Computer

For the past six years, I have been teaching general computer courses to high school and adult students. I think it is important that every citizen, if possible, learns how to use a computer. Our world, indeed, our society, has developed into a high technology environment and computers are at the core of this environment. The information age has made it almost mandatory to know computers and I have been teaching computing based on the Microsoft Windows Operating System from version 3.1 to Windows 7 system. In addition to the operating system, I also teach the Microsoft Office desktop applications that run on the Windows platform. These applications include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

I possess a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and a Vocational Teaching Credential from the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing authorizing me to teach computer technology.

I look forward to sharing my experiences in this subject matter with you and to learn about your life experiences with computers as well.

Grammar

Grammar is the art and skill of using a language that complies with that language's
rules and protocols for speaking and writing the language correctly.

The English language is especially difficult to speak and write correctly because it is a derivative language based on more older languages some even ancient in their origins.

As a result, many English words may sound the same; but have totally different meanings. This is made more difficult depending on the context in which a word is used.

Particularly troublesome is the use of descriptive clauses within a sentence which do not match the verb in the sentence.

For example, the sentence above that begins with the word 'Particularly', did I use the verb 'do' correctly or should I have used the singular form 'does'?

Here is another example of subject/verb agreement.

If all the conditions in the contract is (are) acceptable, would you sign the contract?

What do you think is the correct verb to use?

If you use 'is', that is incorrect. 'Is' refers back to the word 'contract' which is singular and part of the clause that begins with the word 'in'. 'Are' is correct because it refers back to the words 'all the conditions' which are plural.

This course will also cover another very important component of grammar and that is punctuation.

This course in Grammar will clarify and teach the student the differences such as the examples above have demonstrated.

Microsoft Excel

Excel is a desktop application component in the Microsoft Office suite of desktop productivity tools.

It is Microsoft's competitive product for spreadsheet creation. This application enables the user to work with numbers quickly and easily. It does assume that the user possesses basic mathematical skill. At the very least, the user should know the basic mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Excel makes working with numbers fun as well as providing the user with rapid results. It is a highly automated application meaning that the application is able to perform math functions automatically after receiving input from the user.

Excel also allows the user to create dynamic charts based on the spreadsheet that the user created. Many different charts can be created based on the needs and requirements of the user. For example, pie charts, line charts, and column charts are just some of the charts that can be created.

In this course, the student will learn how to write formulas that Excel executes to perform the functions for the user to obtain desired results.

Also different formatting schemes are covered in this course to make the spreadsheet and chart have visual appeal.

These and many more features and functions in Excel will be presented.

Microsoft Outlook

How to use Microsoft Outlook

Outlook is the Microsoft Corporation's people collaboration application that runs on a PC installed with the Microsoft Windows Operating System.

There are many versions of Outlook each newer version has improvements and enhancements to achieve more effective and efficient collaboration among people.

It is a productivity computer tool to enable people to actively communicate with each other (also known as e:mail). It enables people to organize their work, plan activities, schedule activities, invite others to meetings, and to invite others to video conferences, phone conferences, and other activities that require scheduling of many people or one person. The application is scalable in this aspect.

As a computer user of many years, I have also taught many Micorosft Office applications that include Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook. Outlook is one of the desktop applications bundled within the Office desktop application suite.

I have a Vocational Teaching Credential issued by the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing authorizing me to teach computer operations.

With my background in information technology of over 25 years and my teaching experience, I am confident that I can show how these functions are accomplished using Microsoft Outlook.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint is one of the Microsot Office application components that is bundled with Word, Excel, Outlook, and in more advanced Office versions Access.

PowerPoint gives the user the ability to create visual and audio presentations in a robust fashion. It is especially applied in a very effective and efficient way to present to an audience of varying sizes.

PowerPoint uses the slide concept to display and project text and graphic information either on a user's computer screen or on a larger screen visible to an audience.

This desktop application like the other companion applications in the Office suite enables the user to exploit the many features and functions to create appealing and attractive presentations.

Formatting both text and graphics is available as well as producing available sound effects to the presentation make this application enjoyable.

PowerPoint encourages the user to be creative and original when producing the presentation because there are many options in terms of color, formatting schemes, slide transitions, sound effects, and like the other Office applications, it has built in automation.

PowerPoint, lastly, is an application to allow the presenter to deliver highly effective and persuasive presentations.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is a word processing application that is one of the office productivity components in the Microsoft Office suite of desktop office productivity applications.

Word enables the user to create and produce professional level documents such as business letters, personal letters, resumes, essays, brochures, memos, tables, and any other documents that require professional level text media.

Word offers many functions and features within the application for the user to select from in order to produce a high quality document.

Functions include but are not limited to text formatting, font size, font style, color, shading, bordering, spell check, grammar check, editing, text manipulation, hyperlinking, line spacing, copying, cutting, pasting, and integration with the other companion office applications such as Excel and PowerPoint.

These and many other functions and features will be covered in this subject.
