About Colleen

Hello! I am a 34 year old writer, yoga teacher, and nursing graduate, currently sitting for my board exam.

I like to think of myself as a professional student, because I am working on my third degree, and continue to enjoy intellectual pursuits. Perhaps the correct term is, nerd? I have experience tutoring on the collegiate level in algebra, English, writing, and resume building. I have taught mindfulness and yoga techniques to children ages 4-12, allowing me to develop an acute receptivity to the needs of a changing classroom dynamic.

Tutoring is an effective way to instruct because on the interpersonal level, a creative approach can be developed specifically to compliment the student's learning style. Everyone is blessed with their own set of talents and strengths, and sometimes it just takes a little assessment to develop these gifts. I like to give my students a quick, fun, learning style survey to see if they work best with visual, auditory, or tactile study and guidance. The more we learn about ourselves, the more we can give to others!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Nutrition

I have taken the required collegiate nutrition course through Miami Dade College as a pre-requisite to enter nursing school. In addition, nutritional knowledge is a valuable component to nursing intervention and preventative treatments. I have extensive knowledge on healthy intake amounts for carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins, and I continually study the unique importance of various minerals and vitamins.

Public Speaking

I took a public speaking class during undergraduate work at Eastern New Mexico University. It was during this class that I learned the importance of a confident and calm demeanor as a way of keeping an audience's attention. Within my time enlisted in the US Army, I most certainly had to speak with confidence and concise commands when addressing large platoons or companies. Being in front of a crowd is an action that does not cause me anxiety, and I rather enjoy it. I've pitched film ideas to classrooms in graduate school, and I still speak in front of students in yoga class when I teach.

Reading

I graduated with an MA in Screenwriting from Cal State Northridge. I worked as a journalist for Okinawa Stripes Military Press 2006-09.

Study Skills

As I am currently immersed in the extensive nursing school curriculum, I am always learning new techniques to maximize my study time. These techniques include creating the right environment, developing a weekly plan, setting goals, and using many different tools, either visual or auditory in nature. Films, note cards, and practice tests are a few examples of different learning platforms. It is important to adapt new study skill habits and change old ones, so as to not let a routine become boring, and to keep the subjects interesting!

Yoga

In 2008, I received my Registered Yoga Training Certification from Core Power Yoga and Yoga Alliance. This was 200 hour curriculum which allowed me to teach yoga. Since then, I have taught on and off for the last seven years and have earned an Experienced E-RYT 500 certification through Yoga Alliance, signifying that my time instructing has grown to over 500 hours. Because I believe in the beautiful benefits that yoga provides, I continue to teach, and have even created my own website.
