Bio

Hi! My name is Matthew and I currently am finishing my last year at William Jessup University, which I was able to attend on a full tuition scholarship. It started when I began scoring in the 97th-98th percentile for standardized tests in 5th grade and then by the 8th grade was asked to take the ACT as part of a national talent search. Without any training or preparation, I was able to get a 29. The next time I took the test while in High School I got a 34, with a perfect score in English....

The next time I took the test while in High School I got a 34, with a perfect score in English. The only time I took the SAT as well, again, without significant test prep, I scored a 1510 and so my parents said they didn't want to pay for me to take it again since they figured that was probably good enough. Back in my senior year of high school, my SAT/ACT scores and my grades qualified me to audition for the Scholar Award at Jessup which has covered all of my tuition for the past few years.

Even when I went in to interview for that scholarship, I had a desire to help and teach those around me, especially those who were having a difficult time preparing for their interviews. Once I began classes as a freshman, I found how much I enjoyed teaching my fellow classmates when they didn't understand the material. This led me to become a private tutor after a friend of mine recommended some high school students to me who were in need of tutoring. I sincerely enjoyed it and only took a pause due to COVID-19 making it difficult to meet in person.

I love working with the high schoolers I worked with, and even if they originally didn't find school very enjoyable and weren't always motivated to improve their grades, I was able to guide them through their classwork and find ways to make it enjoyable. Personally, I find that I enjoy teaching just as much as I enjoy learning and I hope to be a professor one day. While much of my college tutoring experience has been only among my peers and not as a job, it makes me happy to be able to see their test scores improve and to hear them say, "You teach this better than the professor!"
