About Elizabeth

My academic and work background has prepared me to tutor students in a wide range of subjects. I received my undergraduate degree in English Literature from UC Berkeley, am one quarter away from completing my master's degree in Nutrition, and have also tutored elementary and middle school students in math and reading. These experiences have prepared me to tutor students in reading, writing, and nutrition (elementary to college level) and math (elementary to middle school level). I also have extensive experience revising academic essays and personal statements, and helping people in the process of editing their written work.

During tutoring sessions, I try to engage students and make sure to use examples that are relevant, memorable, and fit their interests and learning styles. I give them opportunities to try out different examples and immediately apply the concepts they have learned. I not only explain how to solve the problems on a particular math worksheet, answer a particular set of reading comprehension questions, or write a particular essay, but I think it is important to teach the WHY, so that students feel confident in their ability to complete similar questions and assignments in the future. I really want students to succeed and will work hard to help them progress in meeting their academic goals.

In my previous tutoring experiences, I try to explain mathematical concepts in a way that is relevant to students. I know math is very theoretical and that students have different learning styles, so I try to utilize pictures, stories, and examples that are catered to students' interests and hobbies.

I am one quarter away from finishing my Master's degree in Nutrition. I have a wide knowledge base about different nutritional concepts, including macro- and micronutrients, biochemical processes, chronic disease management through nutrition, and community nutrition, and can explain them in an understandable way that is catered to students' unique learning styles.

I received my undergraduate degree in English literature and have experience tutoring students in elementary-level reading and reading comprehension. My goal is to help students not only answer the required questions, but to help them understand what they are reading, so that the passage can come alive for them and be more than just words on a page. I have also edited academic and admissions essays and currently work as a freelance proofreader.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Nutrition

I am qualified to teach nutrition, because I will be receiving my Master's degree in Nutrition in December of 2016. Over the past two years, I have learned about a wide variety of nutrition concepts, including macro- and micronutrients, biochemical processes, chronic disease management through nutrition, and community nutrition, and am prepared to help students understand these concepts by presenting them in a clear and relevant way.
