About Allen

I have lived in Riverside, CA for my twenty five years of existence. It made sense for me to stay for college and attend the University of California, Riverside. While attending, I studied Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources. Before I made the decision to become a teacher I had every intention to work with people. At the time, I just had no idea that it would be with students. The program helped prepare me for the challenges of working with people in a business setting. It also equipped me with essential tools to advance and flourish in a business setting.

Teaching had not previously been in my plans throughout my academic career. I have always flourished in an interpersonal setting and thoroughly enjoy working directly with people. As I was earning my undergraduate degree I would volunteer my time by tutoring and local elementary schools and libraries. It was a source of enjoyment, but was unsure if I could teach as a profession. Once I began my career track in Human Resources I felt an empty feeling. The void I felt was the passion, the passion I felt for learning and teaching students. Specifically, I missed the change I was able to directly put on all my students I worked with. The previous experience I’ve gained working with students in and out of the classroom reaffirmed that teaching was my calling. I have yet to experience a feeling better than a second grader giving me a note to express his gratitude for teaching him things that he had no idea existed. There has not been a time in my life that I’ve felt more joy. Every student is different and I know that my teaching career won’t be full of thank you notes, but I hope to be a teacher that inspires by providing wisdom to my students. Webster’s defines wisdom as the ability to discern inner qualities and relationships. My greatest goal is to be able to bring the best out of every student I can by creating an atmosphere for them that shines a light on their top qualities. Knowledge, of course, is an important aspect of teaching, but from my past experience the last four years, I know that wisdom is what you need first. The learning can come after you inspire the students, that is where we can have lots of fun. I’ve had the pleasure to meet and speak with countless teachers and principals in Riverside Unified School District and their encouragement has solidified my confidence to pursue a teaching credential. My desire to teach is not about me, rather, the yearning to help others and the affinity for learning.

I have a strong understanding of math concepts and am very strong in Algebra 1. I am very confident that I can improve the scores of any student at any level.

I have three years' experience in Common Core Standards. I passed the CBEST with exceptional scores. I have passed the first two sections of the CSET as well. I am taking the third in May.

I have been a TA in an elementary setting for two years and have been a substitute teacher the last year.

I have been tutoring and teaching phonics within Common Core for the last three years.

I play basketball and body-build five times a week.

I try to make learning as fun and engaging as possible. Every session will be different..

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
