Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

After graduating with my MAT in TESOL from the University of Southern California, I have come face to face with exactly what it takes to overcome all obstacles that prevent learners from achieving an increased reading rate, greater comprehension, articulate writing, confident speaking, and precise pronunciation.

General Computer

I know all about advanced computer terminology, as well as practical applications that can assist you with homework completion and testing.

Handwriting

Most of my handwriting experience comes from teaching in South Korea. I taught students simple ways to write neatly, by giving a number for each line in the letter. For example, "A" would include "1,2,3", for each line.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I've created and presented 40 PowerPoint presentations in the past eight months. I know exactly how to make them appropriate for your content, visually stunning, and specific for your topic.

Microsoft Word

While working on my Master of Arts in Teaching degree, I had to use MS Word on a daily basis to create reports, case studies, and letters. I can teach you specifically all about the elements of a great layout, formatting, and structure.

Phonics

I taught Kindergartners phonics in South Korea, where I would also tie in pronunciation. I realized that if I let bad pronunciation habits continue, it would be harder to break once older.

I used innovative tactics for phonics, including rubber bands, flash cards, and getting students to stand up!

Public Speaking

My undergraduate degree is in theatre arts and entrepreneurship. Within those disciplines, I had to use adrenaline to overcome stage fright, master the art of negotiation, and work a concise sales pitch. In addition, having earned my minor from USC's Marshall School of Business, I was coached on how to use inflection, body language, posture, tone, cadence of speech, and rhythm to convey my thoughts. Lastly, my training in theatre/learning to project on stage has helped me understand what it takes to overcome public speaking obstacles.

Reading

Reading comprehension starts with realizing that each word must not be taken apart. Instead, I guide students in understanding that it's better to take strings of words that relate to a story or phrase. Then, students enjoy reading at a faster pace, love discovering the roots of words, and comprehend that it's okay to not know the definition of each word. By the end of my lessons, students love working with context clues when trying to discover the hidden meanings within passages!

Speech

As a professional actor and ESL educator, I have experience teaching pronunciation, articulation, stress, and identifying pronunciation mishaps. Using the color vowel chart and rubberbands also helps to identify stress patterns. English is a stress-time language, unlike languages that are syllable-timed. Together, we can get over the pronunciation hurdle, enabling you to sound more intelligible.

TOEFL

I'm a graduate of the University of Southern California (USC) with my Master of Arts in Teaching (TESOL).

So far, I've taught over 2,400 ESL classes abroad and enjoy applying learning theories in real-time. Equipped with the latest research in ESL teaching, I use theatre arts to teach reading strategies, pronunciation, vocabulary, effective academic writing, and speaking.

I just finished a 16 month contract as an ESL Instructor in Busan, South Korea. Before that, I was a mentor to Kindergartners in Compton, CA. Prior to that, I completely devoted myself to literacy, language, and social skills with AmeriCorps’, Jumpstart.
