Hello! I am a University of California, San Diego (UCSD) graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology and graduated from the University of Southern California (USC) with my Master's degree in Global Medicine. As an undergraduate at UCSD, I worked as a teaching assistant for lower division biology classes and also tutored different math subjects. I have tutored students in math and science at all grade levels: elementary, middle school, high school, college, and adult. I have over ten years of tutoring experience, and I am passionate about sharing my knowledge with students. Wyzant rated me in the top 3% of all tutors for 2019, and it is a blessing to be able to do what I love.

I enjoy tutoring students of all ages, and I always try to maximize students' learning potential by highlighting their strengths and improving their weaknesses. If necessary, I will provide students with extra material to supplement their learning while providing the support and encouragement they need for academic success. I always try to make learning a pleasant and engaging experience by introducing topics in easy to understand ways, while allowing time for extra practice so that students can master concepts. However, I base my methods and adjust my teaching techniques based on each individual's needs.

COVID update: I will only be conducting tutoring sessions online until further notice. Wyzant has an interactive online tutoring platform that allows tutors to video chat and use a whiteboard to teach concepts. Students have said that online tutoring is just as effective as in-person sessions.

My main goal is to benefit and supplement students' learning as much as possible, so I am always open to parents' feedback and suggestions. I do my best to respond to messages in a timely manner and am easy to reach through the Wyzant platform. Feel free to message me with any questions you have or to schedule a lesson!

Elementary Math

The key to tutoring elementary math is to be patient and encouraging. I try to engage students and make the concepts interesting by giving real life examples.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Although every student has specific study needs, the study habits that he or she gains now will last a lifetime. In order to help make schoolwork feel manageable, I believe that it is important to build on the things that each student already does well, and consistently practice new habits until they become second nature. Before I became a Teaching Assistant for college biology at UCSD, I was required to complete a course that trained me on how to identify the type of learner that a student is and recommend the best study techniques for his or her individual learning needs. Also, my experience as a note-taker at UCSD significantly improved my note-taking skills and that experience has given me several strategies that I can pass along to my students. Whether a student needs help creating a study routine, taking effective notes, becoming an independent learner, or getting organized, I can help instill the necessary tools to succeed at any grade level.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have many years of experience tutoring algebra 1 and believe that a mastery of this subject is essential for future success in math. I enjoy working with students at this math level because it is rewarding for me to see improvements in their grades and pertinent to set a strong foundation in the concepts that will be utilized later in their academic ventures.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is one of the math subjects that I have the most experience tutoring. I found that breaking down difficult concepts using a step by step approach provides students with the understanding and confidence necessary to apply their newfound knowledge to more challenging questions. Because Algebra 2 involves concepts that require knowledge from previous math classes, I ensure that students have a strong background in those more basic concepts before tackling more complex concepts.
Biology,

Biology

As a graduate from UCSD with a degree in Human Biology, one of my main passions is tutoring students on the many fascinating aspects of biology. As a recent graduate from USC with a Masters degree in Global Medicine, I was required to take biology classes at the medical school level where I performed at the top of my class in each course. Therefore, I have a very strong background in biology and enjoy helping students discover the intriguing workings of the world of science!
Chemistry,

Chemistry

As a human biology graduate I was required to take college level chemistry courses and performed at the top of my class in each course.
Geometry,

Geometry

After tutoring all math subjects from pre-algebra to calculus, I have noticed that most students struggle because they did not understand a certain concept the first time or it was not taught properly. Therefore, the next lesson they are given in that subject seems even more challenging. I will help you understand the concepts that you are struggling with and catch you up so that you can excel in your geometry class.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Many students that struggle in prealgebra do so because they do not have a strong foundation in math. My main goal when tutoring prealgebra is to strengthen students’s weaknesses in order to catch them up so that they can succeed in their class.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

As a precalulus tutor I strive to build students’s confidence and provide them with the tools necessary for success.

supportive and caring

Always supportive and patient. Teaching preteen girl is not easy. But she has done well! Suzanne sent a homework right after classes by email to me and my daughter, so my daughter can review the work or prepare for the next classes. Prompt communication always. Thank you for her support and caring.

Awesome teacher

Very helpful and was able to explain in detail. Loved how we can see her explain everything online and are looking forward to the next session. Hopefully my son won’t be too camera shy!! Haha.

Patient, kind and fun

My son is entering fifth grade without the benefit of much math instruction due to the pandemic. Suzanne is very kind and established good rapport with him. He reported that it "Only felt like 30 minutes instead of an hour" -- a big compliment from an 11 year old boy on summer vacation.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

We are very pleased with Suzanne! She helped my daughter understand a concept in chemistry that she’s been struggling with! They worked on a study guide for a test until it was completed and by the end of the session my daughter understood what she was doing. And, my daughter got an A on her test! First A on a chemistry test so far! Thank you, Suzanne!

Awesome to work with!

Working with Suzanne was easy and stress free. She was able to help my daughter with her chemistry work within a days notice. My daughter enjoyed her tutoring session and felt prepared for her test the following day. My daughter did very well on her test and expressed that Suzanne really helped her to understand the work. We will be working with Suzanne again!

Patient and Adaptable!

Having a math teacher who is constantly teaching us different, non-conventional solving methods, Suzanne always finds a way to break down the material in a way that I understand. Her patience and adaptability towards her students time and learning goes unmatched!
