About Kimberly

My name is Kimberly. I am an adjunct professor of English at California Baptist University during the regular school year. I have four years of experience teaching and tutoring at the college-level, over six years of experience working with children from infancy through sixth grade in a variety of capacities including teaching and tutoring and have taught high school English for one year in Missouri. I have a Masters in English Education and have passed both the CBEST and CSET exams.

I am also highly proficient in basic mathematics and algebra (frequently helping my own children in these areas) and fairly proficient in most other academic areas. I am fully qualified to teach Theater Arts to any age, and am musically inclined. I strongly believe that if one is encouraged to do their best and is led to believe that they can do better, then they will exceed even their own expectations. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss how I can help your child be successful.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

I am proficient in Art History, having successfully completed two Art History courses and frequently using Art History during classroom instruction. I feel confident that I can instruct / tutor Art History (paintings, sculptures, specific artists, and time period). I am particularly interested in the work of Degas, Michelangelo, Monet, Delacroix, Van Gogh, Dali, Picasso, Pollock and Warhol, to name a few. Cubism, impressionism, surrealism and postmodern/modern/abstract art are amongst my preferred styles.

Bible Studies

I am well versed in the Bible, both old and new testaments, having read the Bible several times and am a born-again Christian as of 1996. I obtained my B.A and M.A. / M.S. English / Education from California Baptist University and am an adjunct professor of English there. I have also taken two Bible courses at the university level.

CBEST

I passed both the CBEST and the CSET on the first try in 2008 and feel that I can offer helpful insight to prospective test-takers on best testing strategies, what to study and what to expect.

Elementary (K-6th)

I possess an M.A. in English Education and have over 10 years of combined teaching/tutoring experience. I have spent 6 years teaching/tutoring students from infancy through 12th grade in both private and public schools, 3 years tutoring college English at a public community college and 2 years teaching college English at a private university.

English

I have a Masters in English and am an adjunct professor of English at California Baptist University.

Film

As a graduate student in the English program, I took three graduate film courses, earning an A in each course. I have also subsequently utilized film adaptation, intertextuality and theory in my Master's thesis.

Grammar

I have always had a natural knack for grammar and mechanics, being considered lovingly as a bit of a "grammar-Nazi". Having an M.A. in English, with a particular interest and natural ability in writing makes me more proficient in grammar than the average person. Additionally, teaching and correcting grammar is naturally a part of my job as a composition professor.

Literature

I possess an M.A. in English and have read extensively over the course of my academic career as well as for pleasure. My preferred genre of literature is post-apocalyptic fiction, but I am also well-versed in Shakespeare, American, British and Russian literature, and selected literature for K-12 curriculum. Unlike many of my peers in high school and undergraduate college, I actually read most of the assigned literature and am well-positioned to provide informed feedback on the literature that many teachers assign.

Microsoft PowerPoint

As an adjunct professor of English and volunteer public relations representative for a non-profit organization, I often use PowerPoint to enhance lessons and create presentations to inform the public on the services provided by the non-profit organization. I am highly proficient in using PowerPoint to create presentations complete with music, special effects/animations, video, pictures, etc. I feel confident in my ability to use PowerPoint as an instructional tool.

Microsoft Windows

As both a PC (Personal Computer) and Apple iPad user, I am relatively proficient in the usage of both of these technologies. I regularly use Windows applications on my laptop, as well as MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc. For my classroom instruction, I regularly use technology, including, but not limited to, PowerPoint and Word and use Excel to create grading and attendance spreadsheets. I feel confident in my ability to teach basic computer applications.

Microsoft Word

I often use MS Word to create various types of word documents for personal and professional use. I used MS Word throughout my academic career, for essays and Master' theses, and now use it professionally as an adjunct professor of English to create agendas and other documents for instructional use. I feel confident in my ability to use and teach others to use MS Word.

Phonics

I have an M.A. in English Education and have multiple years of teaching experience ranging from pre-school to college. I have 6 years of experience teaching K-6 grade, including language arts and phonics instruction, 1 year teaching high school English and 2 years teaching college English. I also have over 4 years of tutoring experience in Language Arts.

Proofreading

I have a Masters in English and am an adjunct professor of English at California Baptist University, specializing in composition instruction. My duties as a professor entail a great deal of proofreading and grading of college-level writing.

Public Speaking

I have several years of experience with public speaking, including teaching, presenting at academic conferences, public performance and coursework.

Reading

From a very young age, my mother fostered in me a love for reading. As a child, I routinely participated in Reading is Fundamental. As an adult, I majored in English in college and obtained an M.A. in English and am now committed to encouraging my students to read, teaching them that reading can be fun and interesting, instructing students in ways to break down large words and learn new meanings, and developing better writers through continued reading practice.

Spelling

I have excellent spelling capabilities. I participated in three spelling bees in grade school, winning twice.

Study Skills

Having undergone several years of education, including two separate graduate programs, I have excellent study skills. I have always graduated at the top of my class and had a 4.0 GPA in the Education program (graduate studies) and a 3.97 in the English program (graduate studies). I also am familiar with AVID note-taking format and other study skills, including how to work with ADHD while studying / completing assignments.

Theatre

Having obtained a Masters in English and passed both the CBEST and CSET exams, I am fully qualified to teach Theater Arts at any level and have 4 years of experience teaching children's theater.

Vocabulary

As a professor of English, possessing an M.A. in English, I have a relatively extensive vocabulary and encourage vocabulary building in my own students by presenting them with new terms during lecture/class times, in reading experiences and in the use of a thesaurus and/or dictionary with their writing assignments.

Writing

I have a Masters in English and am an adjunct professor of English at California Baptist University, specializing in composition. I enjoy writing professionally and for pleasure, have been previously published and have presented at academic conferences.
