About Geoffrey

I love to help students learn. I love it when the 'light bulb' comes on. As your tutor, I want to know in general what you are trying to accomplish as well as the specific science concept(s) you are having difficulty understanding. I think I have good ability to teach chemistry at high school and college levels. Feel free to contact me, and we can schedule a mutually convenient time to go over your lesson. I look forward to meeting you.

Recently, I taught two years of high school chemistry at Immanuel Christian School in Ridgecrest, CA. I am now a visiting teacher in the San Diego Unified School District. I served on the Board of Trustees for Sierra Sands Unified School System (a public school) in Ridgecrest, CA, and for the K-12 Immanuel Christian School. While attending college, I was a recitation and laboratory teacher for freshman chemistry.

Additional qualifications to be a tutor are as follows: I have a Ph.D. in Polymer Science from the University of Akron, and a combined bachelors/masters degree in chemical engineering from Ohio State University; a minor in mathematics. I excelled in science and math (mostly A's in chemistry). I have over forty years experience performing chemical research and new product development in industry (B.F. Goodrich) and for the U.S. Navy. I published over 125 chemical research papers and I have 20 U.S. Patents. While a federal laboratory employee, I was elected a Fellow by my peers, I received the Vice Adm. Bowen Award for patents of great value and the William B. McLean Award for innovation. I wrote chapters and edited a book on Polymers for Second Order Nonlinear Optics; organized several international polymer symposia; and participated on the California Blue Ribbon Taskforce on Nanotechnology.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemical Engineering

I have a bachelor and masters degrees in chemical engineering from Ohio State University. I have hands-on experience in chemical engineering unit operations including distillation, crystallization, drying, polymerization, fermentation, photo lithography and computer simulations of transport phenomena. I have many years of experience writing papers and delivering oral presentations of research and development in this field. I have a minor in mathematics from Ohio State University.

Chemistry

My chemistry qualifications are: I have a PhD in polymer science, with minors in chemistry and math. I worked in two major chemistry research laboratories for most of my professional career. I taught Sr. High School Chemistry for two years. I recently retired. I love chemistry and teaching chemistry. I am a Visiting Teacher in the San Diego Unified School District.

Organic Chemistry

I was an 'A' student in Organic Chemistry in undergraduate and graduate school classes (it was my favorite subject) at Ohio State University and at the University of Akron. I specialized in organic polymer chemistry for my PhD degree. I have many years experience working with PhD organic chemistry majors, and in leading project teams of industrial organic chemists. I taught two years of sr. high school general chemistry that included several weeks on Organic Chemistry.

Very knowledgeable and patient tutor!

My niece is taking chemistry honor course at 9th grade. She is always a good student with A grades. However, she has big problem with this course since her teacher is giving very tough exam. "Tough" here means beyond the course materials. It sounds ridiculous, but unfortunately true. Geoffrey helps a lot with reviewing and extending the knowledge based on her course materials. He is very patient a
