About Maria

Hello everyone,

My name is Maria and I am currently working on my Masters in Mathematics. I've been tutoring for over 5 years now and it is a very rewarding profession. Ultimately my goal is to become a Community College professor. I have had the opportunity to tutor students of all ages and all walks of life.

Personally I believe that this has made me a much better tutor. I've developed the ability to explain things in 3 or 4 different ways. I've been able to perceive if a student is more of a visual learner or maybe hands on. No two people learn the same way. Therefore, a tutor needs to know different ways to teach. Once a tutor is able to know how a student learns then the teaching process becomes so much easier.

Math is a beautiful subject that is badly misunderstood. Students usually think that all they have to learn is numbers and formulas. But there is so much more than that. Math is basically a different language, but nor a difficult one. Once the student begins to understand the formulas, terminology, how it was created, was it derived from another formula? and how can it be a applied to a series of problems then it allows the student to have a better understanding of the subject.I try to emphasize the definitions necessary to succeed in the subject. Remember, no one is bad in math. It just takes some people a little more work than others. That includes myself, compared to my friends. I find my self studying an hour or two longer than other students. But I don't give up.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
