About Michelle

I have a Bachelors Degree in Literature and I completed an additional 2 years studying curriculum for educators and strategies including passing courses designed for teaching ESL/ELL English Language Learners; (I have moderate Spanish speaking/reading skills, yes, but sadly, I am not fluent) I shadowed 2 instructors in high school ELL English/Language Arts Classes for one term, and also assisted in tutoring in the AVID program at a local high school. My concentration was Literature, and I took a well-rounded set of courses to include Social Studies (to gauge how literature affected culture and society), history classes ( to get an overview of the time period these "classic" literature titles were published, as well as for my own curiosity and total studious personality also).

I was an English major so I am fairly secure in saying I can assist you with MLA notation for research or "argument" papers, but please note: I will not write the paper, or "do" your homework. I can only help you improve the skills you require to complete any assignments or to pass the test you are studying for.

I am presently balancing my time- Feb to May 1, between tutoring a half-dozen students per week in the subjects of; English, and Math. For the Language Arts students I am mostly focused on three topics: grammar- sentence structure, composition writing or simple paragraphs, and discussion of "multi-meaning" words or new vocabulary, often in context of grade specific reading selections for students 2nd to 6th. For my Math students (4th to 9th graders), I have been assisting with many topics of basic Math- adding/multiplying fractions, Pre-Algebra basics such as simple equations and what is the coefficient and the Distributive/Associative/Zero properties, and plotting ordered pairs, as well as introducing Geometry: faces, vertices, identification of shapes, congruent figures, line of symmetry, plus more.
I am an avid reader and I will gladly discuss so called "boring" grammar topics and literature themes for hours at a time if you need/want me to, AND I will try to make it fun for you as well. Math is alright once you know the rules, and I don't mind practicing the basics with you until it becomes a natural skill.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I was also a teacher assisting in the AVID program (high school level) and taught me many useful study techniques as well.

Vocabulary

I have a BA in English-Literature and Language (linguistics and history of language) and spent four months as an AVID program teacher assistant in a High school setting, which included teaching vocabulary.
