About Marina

I have an early childhood education certification and have taught K-5 grade. I have a graduate degree in Educational Psychology and focused for many years on better understanding learning and the brain. I run a private school in Redwood City and LOVE tutoring students in the community in my free time! I have extensive experience working with mixed learners in all subject areas.

I specialize in study skills to support students in their educational experiences. Social and emotional development and a focus on making learning fun are very important to me. I am experienced in differentiating content, breaking down assignments, creating supplemental lessons, visuals, and hands-on extension activities for real-life application of learning objectives.

In addition to general education and Common Core teaching experience, I have extensive experience working with different learners. I specialize in Autism, TBI, ADHD, Dyslexia, and various special needs.

I would love to connect with more learners in the community. I lead individual tutoring sessions, buddy pairs tutoring sessions, or small group instruction. Students are welcome to come to my tutoring space in Redwood City or I would be happy to travel to you in the local Bay Area. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I tutored and tracked progress in CA common core standards for grades K-8th grade. I am familiar with the standards and have created rubrics and grading systems to target standards.

Dyslexia

My 15 years of experience working with these bright, yet struggling learners has taught me that structural support systems and flexible curriculum are key. I use a multi-sensory teaching style in a well-structured environment that provides support to the dyslexic learner. For reading, I tend to focus on teaching whole word recognition before phonics, building on the dyslexic learner’s natural, picture-oriented learning style. In math, I focus on working whole to part, making learning hands-on and kinesthetic, building foundational skills and finding practical uses for math. I am familiar with implementing Davis Dyslexia, Real Spellers, Structured Word Inquiry, and Visualizing and Verbalizing; YouCubed, Woodin Math, Marilyn Burns, Singapore Math, and Making Math Real. I use Manipulatives, diagrams, and other visual supports are integrated into the math lessons in order to utilize our students’ strengths. I have also utilized strategies with using different type font, different color backgrounds on materials, and teaching concepts in different ways.
