About Jean

EXPERIENCE & PHILOSOPHY:

With a GMAT score of 740, SAT Math + Verbal score of 1500, I joined a tutorial company over 6 months ago and have logged well over 100 hours of test prep time. Using customized lesson plans and homework sets, I've helped students increase their scores in the GMAT between 30-60 points with only 8 sessions and have helped students taking the updated SAT increase their scores between 150 to 350 points.

I incorporate into my lessons the psychology behind how we learn new concepts and thereby discover how to apply them appropriately. With both a tech and an artistic background, I’m particularly interested in using technology to teach concepts in visual, interactive, and fun ways. Particularly, I use powerpoint and create customized lesson plans and homework sets based on a particular student's strengths, weaknesses and goals.

I would credit my teaching philosophy to my mom - a college psychology professor prior to immigrating to the U.S. The methods she used to help me learn and to drive my curiosity still influence how I think and learn concepts today. From her, I learned that a meaningful education requires more than just knowing facts and how to find the right answers. A good teacher must help students recognize their individual learning styles, discover any flaws in their foundation knowledge, set reasonable goals, and look for deeper meanings behind why a problem is best solved a certain way. Moreover, she taught me the importance of concise communication, organization and empathy when teaching. I think that not only is teaching more similar to coaching than lecturing and assigning work, but also clear presentations, goal-setting and practice are crucial.

GMAT:

It may seem like overkill to most, but I've studied both the Veritas and Manhattan GMAT study guides alongside the GMAC Guide and pulled the best lesson strategies to incorporate into my lesson slides. We'll work with GMAC's Official Guide to the GMAT questions together, carefully looking at the quickest steps to get your answer. Focus is on a far deeper understanding of the content, then later, a grasp of smart test strategies (no gimmicks).

SAT:

I use a combination of methods and practice from McGraw Hill's SAT, the Official Guide, Khan Academy and Kaplan to prepare students for the New SAT. Like most test prep books, each has it strengths and weaknesses. Students get packets of lesson slides for notes as well as practice slides to complete. We work together on problems to make sure they understand the "why" and not just the "how." This is important to do since the new SAT questions probe more into reasoning than "answering".

FINAL NOTE:

Working through test prep questions and guides on your own is definitely a good strategy to get the score that you want, but a good tutor will always have the intuition to help you get there faster. Finding a tutor is very much like finding a personal trainer at a gym - when you find one that understands your strengths and weaknesses and can introduce you to more efficient ways of getting to your goal, it'll be worth your time.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

GMAT

I scored a 740 on the GMAT, placing me in the 97th percentile. I attribute my score to countless hours of review the study guides from Manhattan GMAT, Veritas and Powerscore GMAT. After reading through them, I found that each had their strong suits. I've put together lesson slides based on the content from the notes that got me from a 670 to a 740 as well as practice from the Official Guide to ensure the practice you get is as close as possible to what you will see on the actual GMAT.

SAT Math

I use a combination of methods and practice from McGraw Hill's SAT, the Official Guide, Khan Academy and Kaplan to prepare students for the New SAT. My Math score was a 760 on the old SAT, which was very similar in content. My undergraduate major was in Mathematics/Economics, so it gives me an edge in figuring out the "heart" of a math problem.

SAT Reading

I find that approaching the New SAT's Reading section requires a deeper understanding of the text, which I can provide with my background in teaching higher level comprehension and critical reasoning questions from the GMAT. On the old SAT, my reading score was a 740.

SAT Writing

I will provide detailed notes and practice on all grammar concepts tested. My Writing score on the old SAT was a 670, but I recently scored in the 97th percentile in the GMAT Sentence Correction portion.
