I tutor students from third grade to graduate school. Overall, my passion is teaching and I will go to great lengths to help a student succeed.

I love to teach writing, public speaking, journalism, English as a Second Language, and recently, race relations. My students and I form a symbiotic relationship since we are both learning from the process. My writing improves with each session and my students elicit better ideas and learn to express material they thought was too difficult an hour earlier.

After undergrad, I worked as a journalist for five Bay Area newspapers writing science, health, or environmental articles. I have worked as a tutor and teacher for six years.

Public Speaking

I teach public speaking during the school year and over the summer. We practice presentation skills as well as acting or feigning confidence. We discuss the importance of enunciation and inflection of the voice. But most importantly, I have them present on their own or in groups, usually multiple times, until they are comfortable with the material and able to present an eloquent speech.

The second language used in my home growing up was Spanish so I have an innate understanding of the language. I currently use Spanish at an intermediate level. It is a beautiful language which I love to incorporate into my lessons if it is needed.

Elementary (K-6th)

I gained experience tutoring classes of K-6th graders at San Juan Elementary School in San Juan Bautista. I taught math and reading including story comprehension. The main difference in teaching K-6th graders compared to high school and middle school students is trying to make everything into an interesting game to hold the student's attention. It also helps to be authoritative from the very beginning.

Spelling

Spelling is an underestimated skill. Many believe that it is not necessary in light of spellcheck. However, some tests must still be handwritten and spelling may be taken into account. I check for spelling during my writing lessons and try to break bad habits.

I will also add that I have written professionally for a few years by writing for numerous newspapers in the Bay Area, including the San Francisco Bay Guardian. I take a pragmatic approach when teaching writing to be applicable in the real world. However, I also try present the material in a way that resonates with the student so that it is interesting and enjoyable.

Knowledgeable and professional tutor

Melody is a great teacher. I have been getting English coaching from her for a year now. My pronunciation and written skills have dramatically improved. She has a lot of patience and she also tries every possible way to adapt to my busy schedule. Excellent coach and very professional.

knowledgeable and nice

She is nice and knowledgeable. However, it is not a match for us as a SAT writing tutor. Thank you for pointing all the grammatical errors that my son has. However, we need someone to know how to read critically, analyze and write that can help my son to achieve a good score in SAT.

Best tutor in the world!

The title seems to be too extreme but I believe she deserves it. I have studied English with her for 2 months so far and it is totally my sense according to my lessons. She is very professional, she can exactly find what I want and teach it. I can feel a great improvement of my English. That was exactly what I want through this lesson. Also she is very patient - she tries to correct me as much as she can. Also she has a beautiful smile to make students be happy. :)

Good tutor but charges too much

Good tutor, but charges too much now. Students need learn, yet her charging fee is too high.

Very Good Teacher

Melody has been tutoring my daughter for almost the last 4 months and I already see improvement in my daughter's writing skills. I also got the same feedback from her school teacher. Melody is sincere, and I see every minute of the entire hour getting utilized working with my kid. She prepares well for upcoming lessons and also brings her own useful study material. I strongly recommend her for English tutoring.

Wonderful tutor!

Melody is able to capture my fidgety daughter's attention for the whole hour. She uses different techniques and resources to improve her writing skills. Together they read and analyze texts, study new vocabulary words, and write a lot of compositions. Melody is a very gentle and organized person who really cares about her students.

Great Tutor

I practiced English with her for about three months just before returning to my country. It was a wonderful experience. She was thoughtful and a well prepared teacher. I had problems with pronunciation and using proper expressions in English. She focused on what I wanted to learn and helped me a lot. If I come to California again, I definitely will study with her again.
