About Katherine

I'm pleased to meet you. I enjoy working with students of all backgrounds. I am currently a substitute teacher and love it. It's wonderful to be able to help out so many different students. I am currently in the process of applying for jobs to become a professor or obtain a teaching credential. Teaching students new things and helping them to learn I find is one of the most joyful things in life.

I also love learning, and graduated with my B.A. in Religious Studies with an emphasis on Native American religious traditions from UC Santa Barbara in 2012, and obtained my Master's in the same field from the University of Iowa in 2015. In my educational career I have practiced many hours writing essays and for my thesis and I especially bring that experience to the table for tutoring. I have tutored ESL students before in college to improve their writing skills, and I help students now with the same during substitute teaching. I also love learning about the world, so my knowledge of history and the humanities is another gift I offer for you.

In my academic career I have written many, many essays, and I received A's for the vast majority of them. To obtain my M.A., I wrote an 80-page thesis that was published and it was well-received by my advisors and I wish to continue my education by enrolling in a Ph.D program and furthering my skills in researching and writing. I have also tutored basic writing for the English language in college to foreign students. I have been told that I am a good writer by many teachers and professors in my time.

I absolutely love learning about the world and all those who inhabit it. Ever since I was a young child, I would read thoroughly on natural and human history. Even now I often spend much of my free time reading about those same subjects. In my field of Religious Studies, one has to study history, geography, and diverse amounts of cultures to succeed. I have a background of knowledge for Native American and Indigenous history, American history, world history, and European history. I can also name the majority of countries and many of their languages and ethnic groups on a blank map! In terms of religion, my academic background emphasizes on Native American religious traditions, but I also am able to tutor about other indigenous religious traditions as well as Hinduism. I also know basics of Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Sikhism, Islam, Zoroastrianism, Shinto, and Chinese religions. I also was an anthropology major for quite a while, so I tend to approach subjects from an anthropological perspective.

Thank you for reading all of this! I am willing to tutor students of all ages and all levels. I have worked with a diverse crowd of students in my time, and am willing to accommodate myself for their learning levels and ability. Whether you are a university student struggling to put together an essay in the history of religious thought in America, or an elementary student needing extra help in learning to organize paragraphs, or an ESL student needing proofreading of your class essay, I'm here to help!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

Before I majored solely in Religious Studies, I was a double major in anthropology. I have taken the basic classes for such a qualification, including the three main branches of cultural anthropology, physical anthropology, and archaeology. I also took some upper division classes in the subject and currently would like to pursue ethnographic approaches in my research. Even if I did decide not to officially major in anthropology, I still consider myself to have an anthropological approach in my studies as a Religious Studies major and may pursue it at a Ph.D level. My passion is learning about Indigenous cultures such as Native Americans, as reflected in my research during my graduate and undergraduate career.

ESL/ESOL

I have an academic year's worth of tutoring ESL students at the adult level in reading, writing, and speaking, and I also plan on getting a TEFL/TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) certificate soon and want to teach English abroad eventually. I am also a substitute teacher and have helped and taught ESL students in classrooms.

Proofreading

I have about a year's worth of paid tutoring experience with writing and proofreading essays at the college level, with an emphasis on ESL students. I also wrote an 80 page well-received Master's thesis, and understand basic grammar, sentence structure, paragraph structure, and the formulation of ideas and research that go into writing essays and other important documents.

Reading

I am a substitute teacher, and have experience teaching students of all ages with reading and reading comprehension. From my experience as an ESL tutor, reading is one of the primary characteristics of English fluency and it is transferable to non-ESL learners as well. I also have always scored consistently high on reading comprehension tests in school, and was required to read at least 2-3 books a week in graduate school with strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

Religion

I majored in Religious Studies for both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees. I have taken many classes on a wide variety of religious traditions, including but not limited to Native American religious traditions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Sikhism, Islam, Zoroastrianism, Shinto, and Chinese religions such as Daoism and Chinese Popular Religion. I emphasize in Native American religious traditions, and I wrote an M.A. thesis on the wolf hunting controversy in the Great Lakes concerning the Ojibwe nation, but I feel comfortable tutoring about all the religions I posted above.

World History

I am a substitute teacher, and I am particularly inclined towards teaching for history and social studies classes. I usually go out of my way to contribute even more to the lesson plan with my knowledge! I have both a B.A. and Master's in Religious Studies, a discipline which involves historical approaches to research and methodology, and through my studies I am knowledgeable about world history and I enjoy it. I often read about world history for pleasure!

Writing

I have a year's worth of experience tutoring writing at the college level, particularly for ESL students, but I am willing to tutor for both ESL and non-ESL students. I am also a substitute teacher, and have worked with students of all ages and backgrounds on their writing skills in the classroom. I also have a Master's degree in the humanities, and wrote a well-received 80 page thesis. Several professors have commended me on my writing skills!
