Please allow me to be your partner in mastering the math or computer science subject you’d like. And as a grandmaster-rated chess champion, I can help get your game to competition level.
With 15 years’ experience, I’ve tutored students from vastly different backgrounds—from an ambassador’s daughter to the disadvantaged in Compton. And it’s not just high school and SAT math that I’ve taught: As an undergrad in UC Irvine’s esteemed Computer Science and Math programs, I taught my peers. I then taught as a grad student at Georgia Tech.
I’ve seen my students achieve perfect SAT math scores, and I’d like to guide you to that same level of success. Be it tricky geometry proofs (which are easier than they seem) or prepping for AP and ACT math exams, I’m here to help you gain the competitive edge needed for acceptance to a discerning college.
When it comes to chess, I used to play competitively and I've written four books on the subject, featuring original openings and strategy. I've successfully tutored dozens of students—of all ages—to stellar ratings.
I'm eager to get started with you. I will try my hardest to make learning fun specifically for you—I promise!
James R. Dear Student,
Please allow me to be your partner in mastering the math or computer science subject you’d like. And as a grandmaster-rated chess champion,
James helped me break down a project into small parts in order to make it simpler. This made it easier for me understand it.
James helped my son prepare for the ACT math test. Very patient and had a new way to look at the test which was very helpful.
James has been a great help with tutoring my son in AP Calculus. He knows the material, and can explain it well.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I excel at taking tests, including standardized tests, and I can help you, too. The ACT Math is challenging because you have to answer 60 questions in 60 minutes, and many of the questions are word problems. We can work together to improve your score and your time management skills.
I received two As in high school AP Algebra 1, and I still remember everything I learned! You might be new to high school, and that's a big enough challenge as it is. I can help you learn and remember, too!
Algebra 2 is the last algebra class you'll take until possibly college, and it's your preparation for Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus and beyond. I want this chance to help you prepare for your future.
I finished in 2nd place two years in a row at UC Irvine's campus-wide tournament in 1992 and 1993. I've published 4 books on chess (describing new opening theory), and I've taught chess and ran tournaments for children of all ages. I can help you win games against your friends and family, or even perform well in nationally rated tournaments full of fierce competition.
I earned a BS in Information & Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine, in 1993. I then earned an MS in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1995. I also studied Computer Science at the University of Leeds in 1990-1991. I've worked as a software engineer, a system and network administrator, and an independent research scientist in artificial intelligence and advanced algorithms. I taught computer science courses while both a grad and an undergrad student. I did research in artificial intelligence while at GA Tech for NASA.
I made As in high school AP Geometry. Geometry provides the basics for later studies in Trigonometry and beyond, and if your teacher requires you to do mathematical proofs, it's also probably the most difficult math class in high school. I can lead the way.
I can help prepare you for high school by doing well in Prealgebra. You just aren't ready for high school until you've mastered it. And with mastery under your belt, you'll not only be ready for Algebra 1, but you'll be better prepared for Algebra 2.
