I am a professor of chemistry and organic chemistry in Redlands, CA with 18 years of teaching and tutoring experience.

I teach general chemistry, organic chemistry, and spectroscopy at my University, and I tutor introductory, AP, general, and organic chemistry from my home. I completed two undergraduate degrees in biology and chemistry at the University of Redlands in Redlands, CA, and I completed my graduate degrees (MS, Ph.D.) in chemistry at Yale University in New Haven, CT. My specialty is organic chemistry.

As an undergraduate, I tutored general and organic chemistry for three years as an individual and group-based tutor. In 2005 (at the end of my junior year) I was named Tutor of the Year by the University of Redlands Tutoring Center. I continued to pursue my love of teaching in graduate school, teaching organic chemistry as a Teaching Fellow and tutor at Yale's Center for Science and Quantitative Reasoning. In the four years that I served as a tutor, I was nominated for the University's Graduate Teaching Prize three times.

Organic chemistry is notoriously a very difficult subject for young scientists as it is traditionally revered as heavy on memorization and excruciating in its complexity. It is also a very different style of chemistry compared to most others, in that it is much more qualitative than quantitative. As a tutor, I teach organizational techniques that simplify memorization tasks and emphasize thinking in the "big picture" to avoid getting bogged down in minutia. Students often come to discover that mastering just a handful of fundamental concepts can make learning large volumes of material fairly painless. In fact, the rules of chemistry are very simple. Once you master those rules, any problem, no matter how complicated, becomes trivial.

I am patient and do my best to promote a relaxed, productive, and respectful working relationship. Additionally, I am willing to take on students who are struggling or those who are looking to get ahead in their studies.

Fantastic Tutor

John helped me with stereochemistry and NMR, and he was the best organic tutor I have had. Not only did he help me complete the assignment, he also explained very important concepts and why things happen. He was extremely patient and helpful, and I would definitely recommend him as an organic tutor.

Organic chemistry

Early in my daughter's first term of Organic Chemistry it was apparent she was struggling. John is an amazing tutor and has been an excellent fit for her. He is very patient. He not only explains underlying principles but anticipates and prepares her for the next question she is likely to see on an exam. He is flexible and very generous with his time. With John's help my daughter completed the term with an A- and has started working with John again this term!

Knowledgeable and patient

John has been a game changer for my daughter! He has helped her to feel so much more at ease and enjoy her chemistry class by working with her to strengthen her understanding of each unit. Since starting to work with John, her test grades have shot up, and she is confident in her ability to do well in chemistry. John is incredibly knowledgeable of the material, and patient and explains difficult concepts easily as well. We will definitely continue to work with John, and highly recommend him to students at any level of chemistry.

Excellent tutor, very thorough and patient

John has been instrumental in helping me with homework assignments, material review, and preparing for my exams. I couldn't take o-chem and be successful without John's help!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

We went over Sn1, Sn2, E1, and E2. It was very helpful. He created real life examples so it was easier for me to understand the information. He draws pictures that make the information easy to understand. He simplifies the most complex concepts.

Good at explaining

John does an excellent job at explaining concepts. He takes things slow and answers any questions you may have. He is great at tutoring, and I recommend him for anyone taking orgo.
