I may be the only tutor with WyzAnt who is also a grandfather. Other than that factoid, I'd like to tell you about myself: I graduated from Tulane University in Mechanical Engineering with honors. After moving to California, I did post-grad work at UCLA in Controls Engineering while working for Hughes Aircraft Company and TRW Systems (For a total of 30+ years). I started tutoring in high school, then college, then with my own kids and grandchildren, and I am now helping part-time with disadvantaged students at a continuation high school.
I still get a big thrill when a student "gets it," and hope that I continue that feeling because nothing is more satisfying than to know that I have transmitted some knowledge and helped to make the world a little wiser, one student at a time. I like to tutor pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 & 2, and Geometry because those subjects provide the foundation for more advanced study in both Applied Math and the physical sciences. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a practical experience base with Algebra, having applied it to solution of real problems in mechanical engineering. While all math is interesting in a theoretical context, I always look to the everyday problems that we encounter as humans as the ultimate reason for the invention of the various forms especially algebra. Put it to work!
My background started with 4 years of math in HS including A1, A2, Plane Geom, Trig, and Solid Geom. Then I studied Mechanical Engineering at Tulane U (New Orleans, La) which included Analytic Geom, Calculus, Descriptive Geom, and Laplace Transformations. From there I came to Calif to work for Hughes Aircraft Co. and attend UCLA working towards a MS in Engineering. I can be reached through WyzAnt if you are interested in my help. I'm sure that I can help you succeed in A2.
I have had occasion to utilize geometry many times over the years as a professional mechanical engineer in the aerospace business at Hughes Aircraft Co and at TRW Space Systems Division. It has also helped me create several novel new inventions.
