About Kisu

Hello,

My name is Kisu and I am a Korean and ESL tutor.
I would like to take this opportunity to share my professional background and experience.

ESL
I am a native English speaker and I gained an interest in teaching ESL at an early age.
My parents immigrated here from Korea, and unfortunately were not fluent in the English language upon arrival.
I reviewed their English and assisted with basic documents and transactions for their business, and I enjoyed the aspect of helping someone learn a language.
Starting at an early age, I started to become very interested in teaching English and translating between both languages.
I continued to gain an interest in teaching English to speakers of other languages, and obtained a TESOL certificate in 2011 from Oxford Seminars.
I also obtained specialization certifications in teaching TOEFL prep. and Business English.
I have experience teaching ESL in various academies and institutions, and also as a private tutor.

Korean
I am a heritage Korean speaker and really enjoy sharing the Korean language and culture to other people.
It has truly been a blessing in my life to have learned a second language while growing up, and I hope to share my knowledge of Korean with others.
I chose Korean as a major because I wanted to learn about the linguistic aspect of the Korean language, and how to teach Korean to speakers of other languages.
I obtained a BA in Korean Language & Literature from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
The program there was really a good fit for me, as I was able to take a wide variety of courses which pertained to Korean and linguistics.
Also, during the last year of my undergraduate studies, I was able to obtain a part-time position at Hongik Korean School in downtown Honolulu.
Teaching at Hongik was an extremely valuable experience for me, as I was able to teach Korean in the classroom and apply my studies and research to practical use.

SLA (Second Language Acquisition), Morphology, Sociolinguistics, Pedagogy, CA (Conversation Analysis) and Phonetics are some of my areas of interest.

I am a caring tutor that caters to each individual student. Each student has a different learning style and I adapt my lessons to fit the needs of each student. I am patient and always willing to help students in every way possible.

Please feel free to contact me anytime to inquire about lessons.
Thank you

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I have been playing basketball since I was 7 year old, and have played on many different teams and leagues. I understand the shooting concepts, different defense methods, different offensive tactics, and the overall fundamentals of the game. I have competed and won first place in many different tournaments, such as the Nike 3on3 tournament, the Gus Macker 3on3 tournament, and various other 5on5 tournaments. I also have experience coaching basketball. I coached in several different junior leagues and was able to show kids the fundamentals of the game. I don't consider basketball just a sport that I can play, but a sport that I definitely understand the "science" of and am able to explain the science and fundamentals to someone. For these various reasons, I feel that I am definitely competent to assist someone with basketball.
