I graduated from UC San Diego with Latin honors in history and am currently studying modern history at the University of Chicago for a PhD. I mainly research religious and intellectual history from the 1600s to the present. Because I study and concentrate on the history of ideas, I am also familiar with modern philosophy and political/social theory.
In addition, I am also extremely interested in languages. I speak fluent Japanese. I went to a Japanese elementary school and have continued my studies in the Japanese language ever since. I also studied 2 years of Chinese, so I can assist in beginner's Chinese.
I have tutored middle school and high school students in a wide range of subjects, particularly focusing on historical studies (social studies, American history AP, European history AP, and world history AP). I hope to help any student in need of a comprehensive education, i.e., I focus on critical ways of thinking and learning at a foundational level that can be used for any subject. I sincerely want to help out anyone who is interested in learning in any subject matter; I will do my absolute best to assist you! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor the topic of religion because of my research at the University of Chicago for my master's degree. Along with studying Buddhism in the 19th century in the East Asian context, I also studied the concepts and histories associated with "religion" in Western thought. I am well versed in the philosophies and theories of religion, and can provide basic information and lessons of major religions around the world in different temporal backgrounds.
