About Hollie

"When a flower doesn't bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower. " Alexander Heijer

Ever since my high school years I've found joy in helping others through education. It was then I found my calling in psychology and have pursued it ever since. I recently earned my Masters from UC Riverside in Developmental Psychology. The focus of my research was on how children and youth who grow up in adversity (e.g., neighborhood violence, low-income/poverty level, history of maltreatment) experience stress, and how that stress exposure influences their future academic success. This background has given me insight into how children process information and learn throughout development.

Some of my other experiences/skills include: Behavior plan consultation with parents and children, strategizing research based methods of learning that fit for your child/youth, and ABA (applied behavior analysis) with children and adolescents.*

*Although I have worked with children with disabilities in the past, I am excited to work with students of ALL backgrounds!

I have a solid background in statistics which incorporates a multitude of algebra based math, giving me the flexibility in the ability to tutor a wide variety of subjects.

Please feel free to send me a message. I'm more than willing to answer any and all questions or concerns you may have.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have had a great deal of tutoring algebra 1 which started when I was in high school. Having been exposed to higher-level graduate statistics I have a solid foundation of the basics and feel that I can break down the material in accordance with any learning style.

Biology

I have experience with multiple courses of college level biology and have studied human physiological functioning at the graduate level.

Elementary Math

I have over 10 years experience tutoring elementary math, with the most recent of them being with common core standards.

Elementary Science

I have over 5 years of experience tutoring science and have proficient skills in finding additional resources for your child to master any science material.

English

I have taught students from as young as four through adult in various levels and areas of English including but not limited to comprehension, writing, vocabulary, grammar, and syntax.

Prealgebra

I have tutored up to college statistics, which builds on algebraic concepts.

Proofreading

Having been a psychology major during my undergraduate career, and earning a master's degree, I have submitted countless papers that were returned with high positive marks. Not only do I have personal educational experience, but I have previously tutored several students with a multitude of writing related projects. Proofreading is essential to any writing process whether it be for writing a letter to your family member or writing your thesis statement. Being able to communicate clearly, concisely, and convincingly are the three C's I live by with any writing related task. Proofreading plays a major role in such a task and is an essential skill needed to become a successful writer.

Psychology

I have recently earned my masters in developmental psychology and have taught several university level psychology courses (e.g., health psychology, I/O psychology, Personality psychology).

Reading

Being a PhD student in developmental psychology, I understand the importance and life-long impact of acquiring proficient literacy skills during early childhood. I have experience in teaching children sight words, phonetic sounds, and various reading/writing tasks that strengthen their reading abilities as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Spanish

I have been formally trained in Spanish for about seven years and have practiced the language most of my life.

Statistics

I completed the statistics requirements that are part of a PhD program. This includes, ANOVA and multiple regression. Currently I am taking more advanced courses in Hierarchical linear modeling.

Study Skills

Throughout my educational career I have seasoned my skills in knowing exactly what to do and what NOT to do when studying for exams, writing a paper, or planning a major project. I am currently a second year PhD student, and have formally tutored for the past seven years. My methods include identifying the key study issues by understanding the student and their focus patterns, as not everyone focuses or works in the same way. Additionally, remaining flexible and self-aware are key elements in mastery of one's study skills.

Writing

As a PhD student I have written many papers throughout my training and have experience in different writing styles. My area of expertise is in research-oriented writing; however, I am comfortable tutoring students in other styles such as persuasive or fictional writing.

Knowledgeable, patient, attentive

Hollie thought my 9yr old son with autism. It is clear that she knows a lot about children on the spectrum. The one thing that stood out when she first walked in was that she communicated with my son directly and had small conversation with him. During the interview, she interviewed me and my son's therapist just as much as we interviewed her. She asked detailed questions regarding behaviors, tri
