About Jennifer

Bio

I am a qualified science teacher from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I have been living in London, UK for the past 2 years teaching all 3 sciences to students in 6-12th grade. My passion lies in helping students overcome a difficult challenge; the proud feeling that you get when you see the 'light bulb' go off in their heads motivates me to work harder and find other effective ways to help students.

I draw on my own experiences as both a student and a teacher to find multiple ways to explain scientific concepts. The use of models and analogies have proven to be hugely beneficial in explaining abstract ideas that can be hard to grasp. I am able to differentiate for all types of learners, as I build on their current knowledge while providing just enough support to be able to reach their goal, but being careful as to not to provide them with too much guidance which only hinders learning.

I have the most experience teaching Biology and Chemistry, as they were my specialisms as a science teacher. I also tutor middle school physics; the curriculum in Canada and the UK are very similar to many of the states in the US.

I am excellent at relating scientific concepts to real world applications, especially things that teenagers relate well with. By doing so, students become interested and start asking lots of questions. This allows them to develop a deep understanding, which allows it to be embedded into their long-term memory, as well as fostering an interest in science.

I find there is not enough emphasis on scientific inquiry and the nature of science, even though they are the underlying ideas that drive science. Once students are able to understand this, they are able to answer many exam questions that require students to think as scientists. It may be easy to memorize a fact; however, questions that ask you to explain a scientific conclusion with evidence are much more difficult to answer if a student does not understand what science really is.

From my experience in teaching science to middle school and high school students, I am aware of the knowledge and skills needed to be successful as students progress through school.

I encourage students to have a chat with me for the first session as we discuss things such as their likes, dislikes, preferred style of learning, strengths, weaknesses and most importantly - their goals. Some studies have found that the way in which a person learns can be as unique as one's fingerprint. I build a positive and strong rapport with my students, which has proven to be one of the most effective ways to make an impact on a student's progress in learning. By doing so, I am able to tailor my lessons to the individual, instead of using generic lessons to address the 'average' learner.
