About Sam

Teaching is a profession that blends beautifully the arts and sciences. This is a profession that pleases, eases, comforts, and rejuvenates the heart and mind." My teaching philosophy has been developed over the past 10 years, molded primarily by my travels which have seen me to the ends of the earth. I firmly believe that if you want to excel at anything, you simply must practice. Practice correctly and with the heart and passion for being the best at whatever it is you are doing.

About me.
I graduated with a BS in Business Management and Economics from California State University Northridge in 2003 and obtained an MBA in Hospitality Finance from Les Roches in Switzerland. Thereafter, I commenced my professional experience with the Sheraton Hotel and Resorts in Tianjin China. In 2006 I moved to Dubai, spent a year with the Jumeirah Emirates Towers working in the Finance Department as a cost controller - a most luxurious experience indeed.
I switched careers in 2007 when a lucrative corporate banking management position presented itself and captivated my imagination of high finance. Unfortunately, a year later the onslaught of the financial crisis crippled those dreams. Notwithstanding, I remained in banking through 2014 when I decided to pursue teaching professionally and obtained my Certified English Language Teaching for Adults certificate from IH Vancouver.
My travels across the world have really impacted the way I approach teaching.

How I can make a difference.
I had difficulties learning throughout my elementary and high school years which were attributed to my intentional disinterest and somewhat rebellious behavior - this was not how I perceived the matter. Never once did it occur to my parents that I had, for a lack of better words, bad teachers who were ill-qualified to teach and had no inkling of how to spark the interest of their students. It is through my own difficulties that I have learned what it takes to be a profoundly good teacher intent on making a genuine difference. First, I love this profession for the personal reward. This is what drives me beyond anything. I also gain great satisfaction from having students excel beyond their own expectations. We are all endowed with the ability to understand the world around us. We just need the right guidance based on each student's unique circumstances and style of learning. I don't believe in blind memorization - I believe in understanding, comprehending, and relating everything to the real and practical world. This is my teaching philosophy and it has served me exceptionally well.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

After graduating with an MBA, Finance in 2004, I have worked in hospitality finance for 3 years for the Sheraton in China and Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts (one of the best hotel groups worldwide).
Thereafter, I worked for 7 years with First Gulf Bank in Dubai as a commercial lender for Multinational Companies with revenues in excess of USD 15Bn.
I understand basic business concepts, principles etc. with specific relation to Finance, Economics, and Banking

Economics

As a business undergrad student, MBA, and finance professional I have been exposed to the theories and concepts of both micro/macro economics. My understanding of these concepts makes it much easier to understand more advanced concepts as well. I earned an A in micro/macro and my exposure to the concepts in real life applications makes explaining the topics much easier and much more relevant. I also believe my style of teaching enhances the experience and ensures learning is occurring.

ESL/ESOL

I have lived in numerous foreign countries including China, the UAE, Ethiopia, Lebanon, and Switzerland. In each of these places I taught English privately to willing students and it is through these various opportunities teaching students from different countries with completely different learning styles that I have learned of the skills that I possess and of my ability to successfully teach English as a second language.

Financial Accounting

I have completed university level Accounting (entry level) and further studies. My practical experience is significantly more important as I have been a commercial lender for 7 years and have managed multinational clients including Lockheed Martin, Fluor Corp., Hyundai Engineering etc. My understanding of accounting and financial reporting is derived from my work experience which will give the student a greater understanding of real world applications to concepts. Accounting is logical if properly explained.

Managerial Accounting

I have completed university level Accounting (entry level) and further studies. Proofreading

I have a voracious appetite for reading and with time have noticed my English (verbal and written) improve tremendously. As such, I have been called on extensively by close colleagues to proof read writing assignments. I also have a tendency to catch typographical and grammatical errors in published books and magazines...
I am currently exploring enrollment in a CELTA program to enhance my teaching of the English language and endeavor that it will improve my techniques and strategies.

Reading

English is my native language and reading is my favorite activity. I have tutored elementary school students during university to read and it continues to be one of the best memories I have to date. I love reading and want to share it with as many people as I can. With the availability of innumerable entertainment options, one of my goals is to encourage young students to choose to read and immerse themselves in the adventure of literature. This is of critical importance considering the state of literacy rates worldwide.

TOEFL

I am a CELTA (Certified English Language Teacher for Adults) earned through IH Career College, Vancouver BC. Certified on November 2014.

Writing

In conjunction with my love for reading is my love for writing. I have tremendous respect for the written word and for those that possess the skill to engage their audience. I aspire to achieve that level of writing and am working towards improving my own writing style and techniques. I would be honored to guide others with the same passion for writing.

I have had the herculean task of transforming mundane financial reports of companies for bank management into fluid, near-enjoyable exposes more closely resembling excerpts of fiction which my superiors valued tremendously.
