About Sam

My teaching philosophy has been developed over the past 10 years, molded primarily by my travels which have seen me to the ends of the earth. The most valuable takeaway from my journey has been the magnificence of diversity.

In 2003 I graduated from California State University Northridge with a BS in Management (minor: Economics). Intent on working for luxury hotels, I moved to Switzerland and obtained my MBA in Hospitality Finance from Les Roches (a most wonderful experience indeed).

It's now 2004. Degree in hand I went off to Tianjin, China to work for the Sheraton. It was here where I first started teaching conversational English. This is also where the seed for my love of the profession was first planted. I receive a call in early 2006. Dubai is booming and work for luxury hotels is on the rise... I was lured away and joined the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel. Surrounded by such opulence, I found myself increasingly wanting to learn the art of fine dining. Notwithstanding, my career in hospitality ended when I was offered an opportunity to work in corporate finance. The world was riding the wave of financial exuberance and the allure of high finance was too strong to repel.

It's now 2007. I Join the commercial banking department of a local bank, financing major infrastructure and commercial construction projects throughout the UAE. I spend a considerable amount of time training new hires, realizing I enjoy doing trainings significantly more than preparing financial proposals and credit analysis reports. Fast forward 8 years later; its 2015. Seeking entry into the teaching profession, I obtain my CELTA (Certified English Language Teacher for Adults) in Vancouver, BC (one of the greatest cities on earth). I am confirmed in my convictions this is the profession I want to pursue in tandem with continued work in the field of corporate/financial accounting (CPA).

As we close in on Halloween 2015, I am presently a student at University of California, Riverside (Accounting: Auditing & Tax Planning); also enrolled in the CERT IBET (Certificate in International Business English Teaching) seeking teaching opportunities in both ESL and Introductory to Intermediate Accounting/Finance.

"Teaching is a profession that blends beautifully the arts and sciences. This is a profession that pleases, eases, comforts, and rejuvenates the heart and mind."

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Accounting

I have completed university level Accounting (entry level) and further studies. My practical experience is significantly more important as I have been a commercial lender for 7 years and have managed multinational clients including Lockheed Martin, Fluor Corp., Hyundai Engineering etc. My understanding of accounting and financial reporting is derived from my work experience which will give the student a greater understanding of real world applications to concepts. Accounting is logical if properly explained.

Business

After graduating with an MBA, Finance in 2004, I have worked in hospitality finance for 3 years for the Sheraton in China and Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts (one of the best hotel groups worldwide).
Thereafter, I worked for 7 years with First Gulf Bank in Dubai as a commercial lender for Multinational Companies with revenues in excess of USD 15Bn.
I understand basic business concepts, principles etc. with specific relation to Finance, Economics, and Banking

Economics

As a business undergrad student, MBA, and finance professional I have been exposed to the theories and concepts of both micro/macro economics. My understanding of these concepts makes it much easier to understand more advanced concepts as well. I earned an A in micro/macro and my exposure to the concepts in real life applications makes explaining the topics much easier and much more relevant. I also believe my style of teaching enhances the experience and ensures learning is occurring.

ESL/ESOL

I have lived in numerous foreign countries including China, the UAE, Ethiopia, Lebanon, and Switzerland. In each of these places I taught English privately to willing students and it is through these various opportunities teaching students from different countries with completely different learning styles that I have learned of the skills that I possess and of my ability to successfully teach English as a second language.

Proofreading

I have a voracious appetite for reading and with time have noticed my English (verbal and written) improve tremendously. As such, I have been called on extensively by close colleagues to proof read writing assignments. I also have a tendency to catch typographical and grammatical errors in published books and magazines...
I am currently exploring enrollment in a CELTA program to enhance my teaching of the English language and endeavor that it will improve my techniques and strategies.

Reading

English is my native language and reading is my favorite activity. I have tutored elementary school students during university to read and it continues to be one of the best memories I have to date. I love reading and want to share it with as many people as I can. With the availability of innumerable entertainment options, one of my goals is to encourage young students to choose to read and immerse themselves in the adventure of literature. This is of critical importance considering the state of literacy rates worldwide.

TOEFL

I am a CELTA (Certified English Language Teacher for Adults) earned through IH Career College, Vancouver BC. Certified on November 2014.

Writing

In conjunction with my love for reading is my love for writing. I have tremendous respect for the written word and for those that possess the skill to engage their audience. I aspire to achieve that level of writing and am working towards improving my own writing style and techniques. I would be honored to guide others with the same passion for writing.

I have had the herculean task of transforming mundane financial reports of companies for bank management into fluid, near-enjoyable exposes more closely resembling excerpts of fiction which my superiors valued tremendously.
