In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have extensive experience in career counseling. My master's Degree is in Counseling and Human Services.
I worked for several colleges and universities in NJ counseling students who needed guidance in selecting a major. I also helped students be placed in cooperative education assignments and internships. Coordinating campus career/job fairs was another responsibility.
As a highly qualified teacher in Language Arts Literacy, the national core standards require that students give presentations in class.
Therefore, I would offer ideas to students on presentation format. For example, How to "capture the attention of the audience" using various techniques like a quote, question or humor (relevant joke or anecdotal story). I incorporated videos that students would critique (some videos came from the TEDX teen conferences).
Each day we may focus on the particular part of the presentation The intro, the body, the conclusion.
While creating a speech/presentation students must keep in mind: What do you want your audience to learn or walk away feeling from my presentation? Or is it a persuasive essay? Then other components are also considered. Students explore the use of visual aids like PowerPoint as a way to enhance their presentation.
In addition to teaching public speaking skills, I taught an afterschool drama club where monologues were studied and acted in front of the entire school community.
Helping students get into character for the performance also helped me become more effective teaching public speaking skills.
