About Derek

My name is Derek and this fall will be my 14th year of teaching 6th grade. I am a 6th grade specialist. I know the standards for 6th grade extremely well, and I have a knack for helping my students succeed in math, reading, and writing. I am confident that I can help your elementary-aged student do well in school. I have had many hours of solid professional development training. I will design lessons that your child will benefit from by giving them formative assessments that we will use to identify where they need help. Your child will learn in a one-to-one manner from an educator that cares about his pupils and knows the content. I have a unique teaching style that is in part due to my military service (Active Duty in the United States Marines and as an Artillery Officer in the Army National Guard). I have a CLAD Professional Clear Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with supplementary authorization in English from the state of California. I also have an M.A. in Educational Technology and Learning from Azusa Pacific University. I am currently working on my Subject Matter Authorization in Middle School Mathematics at the University of California, Riverside Extension. I have had my teaching credential since 1997 and I have been a full-time 6th grade teacher in the State of California since the 2000-2001 school year. Thank you for your consideration.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

AFOQT

I scored very high on the ASVAB when I joined the United States Marines in 1985. I served 4 years active duty in the Marines and throughout the 1990's in the California Army National Guard as both enlisted and officer. I am currently a 6th grade teacher with 13 years experience.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have ten years of classroom experience as a sixth grade teacher. My first six years as a sixth grade teacher were in a middle school setting, grades 6-8. In my six years at this middle school I was a GATE teacher for five of them. I also taught a gifted 7th grade math class and math intervention for grades 6-8. Four years ago I switched to another district with sixth grade being taught in an elementary setting K-6. For the first time in my career I am teaching a 5th/6th combination class. I have a pretty good understanding of the language arts and math standards for grades 4-7. I spent a full school year as a student teacher and volunteer in a fourth grade classroom before becoming a teacher. I have a CLAD Professional Clear Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with Supplemental Authorization in English.

Elementary Math

I have extensive experience and training in teaching math to elementary and middle school students.

English

I have a Multiple Subject Professional Clear Credential with supplementary authorization to teach English through ninth grade.

Phonics

I teach grammar weekly to 5th and 6th graders as part of my weekly language arts instruction. I encourage my students to read at least 30 minutes a day and explain to them why this is the best way to learn grammar rules.

Prealgebra

I have 14 years' experience teaching Prealgebra.

Public Speaking

As a former Marine Non-commissioned Officer, Graduate of Army Officer Candidate School, Army Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, Army National Guard Officer, College Graduate, and current school teacher, I have extensive public-speaking experience. I can share my expertise with you for use in a variety of settings.

Study Skills

As a college graduate I have obvious experience in preparing for assessments. My teaching of study skills is embedded in my daily classroom instruction. I also have the experience of preparing for military tests since I attended a large variety of schools as a member of the United States Marines and United States Army.

Great Tutor

Our experience with Derek was great! My son was very comfortable with him. He is patient. His experience as a sixth grade teacher benefited my son, as he understands the curriculum and classroom environment my son was coming from. He was punctual and flexible.
