About Richard

When I graduated, I had a double major: English and education. I wanted to be sure that I knew a subject and how to get it across. For 50 years, I have been working on both ideas in a single focus, getting a better understanding of how to help students learn. I pursued that end at the University of the Pacific and earned an MA in the teaching of English.

About that time, a college hired me because of the quality of students that I had taught. I taught in the English department for four years and helped map out the Freshman English program. I learned how to access where students were and set up learning programs. This helped me tutor much better. But the best was yet to come; I was asked to direct the college learning center.

I hired tutors and trained them as well as tutored students myself. I usually took the most difficult problems. I learned about learning disabilities and how to help English students overcome them. I enjoy teaching academic literature and writing, as writing essays about literature is somewhat different from research papers. Every year, I have taught ESL students how to communicate and write in English.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

When I took over a college learning center, I had a summer workshop learning how to help ADD/HD students. For 11 years I helped many stay in school.

Dyslexia

I am familiar with the three major kinds of dyslexia and how to overcome the difficulties. I helped support about50 dyslexic students every year at college and have provided support for high school dyslexics as well. I helped author a support booklet for the teachers of my college.

English

I have helped students from middle school to college and have helped some students write their master's theses. Educationally, I have an ABD in the teaching of English--a PhD minus the dissertation. I was the director of a college learning center for 11 years--evaluating needs, tutoring writing students, and training and managing tutors. If there is a learning disability, I have helped hundreds survive in school.

Public Speaking

Teaching public speaking has been a part of my English curriculum for 50 years. I have taught expository speaking-defining an idea, how something functions, and how to do a task. In addition I have taught argumentative speaking--argument of truth, of policy, and of value. I taught drama in high school and college as well as oral interpretation.

Religion

For the first three years of my college education, I was a theology student. Though I changed to teaching, I have continued my interest in Bible study. I have had my students research and write on religious topics as well as English topics. I have been able to help them understand some rather biblical subjects.

Study Skills

As the director of a college learning center, I became aware of the need to help students acquire good study skills: learning styles or how each learned best, time management, how to study assigned reading material, how to pick out important ideas and remember them, how to take tests, academic writing and reports, and how to take good notes. I taught the course that I developed for the 11 years I was there. We did a seven-year study and found that the students taking the class gpa's went up about one letter grade. It helped many to stay in school. I have also taught it for high school students.

TEAS

My background in English and tutoring equip me to help a student preparing for the TEAS in the two sections related to English. I have tutored CBEST students who had failed the English section of that test and they passed. There is a study manual available for 446.00 that would be helpful in how to pass the test as well. I would be willing to acquire a manual, tutor the English and go over the testing skills.

Lots of Knowledge and Patience — Thanks you Rich! My son had his first session with Rich today and it went incredibly well. He was able to diagnose exactly what needs to happen for my son to move ahead in reading and writing. Rich was also understanding when my son, who is dyslexic, became tired and disengaged. He was able to encourage and push as well as back off at the right moments. Rich is an exceptional tutor with many year ...
