About Ruth

I retired from teaching elementary school in June. My experience includes all elementary school subjects, but I enjoy Language Arts most. The majority of my students were English Language Learners. Although I taught elementary school children, I could also teach Writing to Middle School or High School students. My students say I am patient and kind.

I am skilled in teaching young children to read. I know many fun phonemic awareness games and skills. English grammar is my passion ! I can pass that knowledge on to others.

I will help you discover abilities you thought you didn't have. We will take those abilities and reach greater levels of knowledge.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

As an elementary school teacher, my favorite subject to teach was English. I have helped many a struggling reader, especially beginning readers in first grade. I know plenty of reading games that you can learn and later play with each other. Most of my students were English Language Learners. I know many strategies to help students develop reading comprehension as well as vocabulary. My real joy is teaching writing and English grammar. We can work on that too.

Grammar

I have taught for over twenty years. Currently, I am helping both adults and children with their spoken and written English. One of my specialties is being adept at catching errors in grammar. While teaching, I would proofread the work of many colleagues and principals. They knew that they could count on me.

Proofreading

I am a very detailed person adept at catching errors in grammar, English usage, and vocabulary. As a teacher, I have helped many students, colleagues, and administrators polish their writing. Even if your paper is very technical, I can still help you.

Reading

I have been teaching for more than twenty years. My specialty has been beginning readers and English Language Learners. Also, I was in charge of the after school program, where children were helped with homework and played learning games in order to improve their confidence and skills.

Writing

I have over twenty years experience teaching elementary school. I always enjoyed my time writing with my students. Writing is difficult for many people because it is a different and more challenging form of communication than speaking. I can help students overcome their initial hesitation in getting their ideas down on paper. I have also been trained in the latest strategies on how to teach Writing.

Goes above and beyond! — Ruth is extremely patient and truly goes out of her way to make sure the boys understand. She has taught the boys the writing process, including how to organize their thoughts and use transitions and descriptive language. We are so sad that we are moving out of state and will not have the pleasure of seeing Ruth anymore. I highly recommend her! She is an amazing teacher! ...
