About Gina

My teaching philosophy is centered around social justice concepts, student success, a deep understanding of varied learning styles, a flexible methodological process that is adaptive to the situation and the learner. I have patience and I am very comfortable with diverse learners of all ages and abilities. Currently, I am a PH.D student nearing coursework completion in the field of education (I also have a Masters in Education). I have the strong ability to develop curriculum, analyze and evaluate the student as well as determine effective strategies for student success. I can create goals and learning outcomes for the students as well as providing a suggested path for reaching those goals. I have a strong passion for imparting study strategies for all students.

I have been teaching in the community college setting for the past 7 years. I have taught courses in Business Math, Intro to Business and Management, Human Relations, Quality Management, Leadership, Importing and Exporting, Small Business Management, Business Planning, public Speaking, Business Communications and other business related courses. I am multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary-- viewing two or more disciplines and discover new concepts/theories within the two as well as making new discoveries as a result of research in specific disciplines. In Business Math, I use a business perspective and focus on decimals, fractions, percentages, interest etc. In statistics I feel most comfortable with teaching basic statistics, regressions, and survey construction. I have a strong research background as well and can assist with quantitative and qualitative research strategies and documentation. An most of all, a positive attitude! Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I am qualified to tutor in business as I have a M.S. degree in Leadership and Management. I worked in a management capacity for over 10 years in the entertainment field as a coordinating producer. I have also taught as an adjunct professor in business currently and for the last 7 years in a community college setting. I have taught a wide range of business courses such as Intro to Business and Management, Marketing, Small Business, Human Relations, Business Math, Importing/Exporting, Quality Management and other business courses.
My teaching includes methods that can meet diverse learning styles. Hands on activities for the hands-on learner, visual, visual/verbal and visual/non-verbal. I use explicit teaching methods and constructivist pedagogy as well as incorporating experiential learning strategies. I will include other pedagogy as necessary.

Career Development

I have taught as an adjunct professor in business currently and for the last 7 years in a community college setting. I have taught a wide range of business courses such as Intro to Business and Management, Marketing, Small Business, Human Relations, Business Math, Importing/Exporting, Quality Management and other business courses.

More specifically, I taught Life Management. This course has a section that focuses on career development. Personality tests, goal and values clarification, personality job fit are areas for discussion and reflection.

Marketing

I am qualified to tutor in Marketing as I have a M.S. degree in Leadership and Management. I have started two successful businesses and consult for various business in the area of Marketing strategy. I have marketed a women's accessory line and have had publicity in Marie Claire. In Style Magazine as well as a mention on KTLA 5 Style News. Other Marketing projects have included my accessory line featured on a book cover as well.

Microsoft Word

I work with Microsoft Word on a daily basis. I integrate images, text links, utilize standard templates within Word, Mail Merge, track changes in documents, headers/footers etc.

Needlework

As an entrepreneur, I opened a yarn store with a business partner.
During this time, I was a fiber accessories designer. My designs were sold to high end stores nationally as well as having celebrity clientele. Some stores included Henri Bendel in New York as well as Fred Segal. I have also had original designs featured in various magazines and books.

At the yarn store, I taught a variety of knitting and crochet classes including troubleshooting, basic and advanced introductory classes, pattern reading, color selection and more. (A few examples include sock construction, knitting with wire, and knitting with double pointed needles.)

Public Speaking

I am qualified to tutor in public speaking as I have a M.S. degree in Leadership and Management.

Currently, I teach as an adjunct professor in business. I have been working in this capacity for the last 7 years in a community college setting. I have taught a wide range of business courses such as: Public Speaking (I have experience with participating in Toastmasters), Intro to Business and Management, Marketing, Small Business, Human Relations, and other business courses.

My course curriculum for public speaking includes learning how to prepare and give presentations in the following areas: Preparing an outline, speaking extemporaneously, giving an informative talk, the importance of persuasive speaking, the use of visuals, other areas include techniques to calm nerves, making introductions, how to make an announcement, present or accept an award, how to give a special tribute speech, and suggestions on improving conversational ability,

As a professor, I include public speaking as a requirement in all of my courses.

Reading

Last year, I was a researcher about reading and writing across the curriculum for a community college. My responsibilities included reading relevant literature about reading trends and methods for improved reading skills. My team and I surveyed college students, analyzed results and presented our findings to the college. We will provide workshops for faculty on improving reading and writing for their students throughout this year.

Other experience includes teaching Language Arts in a USC sponsored bridge program two-three times per month.

I also have a Journalism background and have taught courses in Business Communications as well.

Statistics

I am a PHD candidate (ABD) with a focus in Higher Education. I have passed all of my statistics courses with an 'A'. I have completed my fourth quantitative course and the focus is on path analysis, factor analysis, and structural equation modeling.

I have experience with survey construction as a student as well as an employee conducting research. I can place survey results into SPSS and interpret and write up data outcomes.

Other areas of statistics include basic concepts- descriptive statistics, inferential statistics (regressions, multiple regressions), chi square, standard deviation, z scores, understanding types of tests used and why they are chosen.

In the near future I will be conducting a pilot study of college campuses for my dissertation. The goal will be to have publishable data.

Study Skills

I currently teach as an adjunct professor in business. I have this position for the last 7 years in a community college setting. All of the courses I teach create opportunities for students to increase their self efficacy and build their capacity to understand how they learn and implement the right strategy for the right discipline as well as their learning style.
Study strategies that I emphasize include, Cornell Note Taking methods, SQ3R notes, Anticipation Guides, PQR methods, memorization techniques as well as student reflection on strategies that best work for the student.
My teaching methods can meet diverse learning styles. Hands on activities for the kinesthetic learner, visual, visual/verbal and visual/non-verbal are incorporated in course delivery methods. I use explicit teaching methods and constructivist pedagogy as well as incorporating experiential learning strategies in order to accomplish this capacity building.
