I establish an immediate rapport with the student aided by my Arts background. I assess the student's strengths and build on abilities that already exist. If the student is an athlete, I relate material and language to sports. If the student is an avid reader I may relate concepts to books, stories the student has read. I rely on my creativity to engage learners. I do not feel I've done my job unless the student walks out feeling accomplished and successful. This is possible if I observe the student's learning style and consistently arrange the work so he has the best chance, not only to succeed, but to be excited about the process. Learning is for life. It's a way to open the imagination and build dreams.
I have worked with young writers and actors, and scholars. I am fortunate to be credentialed (K-12) in a range of subjects (English, Dance, Theater). I access the student's uniqueness with knowledge of Harvard educator, Howard Gardner's "Theory of Multiple Intelligences" in which he proposes that each of us has his own unique way of learning.
I use every aspect of a versatile background to insure success. I am effective, experienced, and committed to excellence. I am very impressed with my session! It was well organized and explained simple enough for me to understand. Also, Joyce gave me the confidence boost I needed. From my experience with teachers/tutors, it makes a big difference when the instructor believes in me and I can truly say that Joyce instilled in me a genuine belief. She was very patient and attentive. She listened to my needs and concerns and overall went above and beyond to help me reach my personal learning goals. She also helped fine-tune my voice with voice projection techniques which is a component for my oral exam coming up. she helped give me advice on how to combat the common jitters most students have before taking a test. Lastly, what I appreciate the most is that she helped enact a simple yet realistic mock exam environment, to help me practice for the real deal. Now I am more excited than ever to take this exam and I owe it to her. Thank you Joyce!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught English and Drama for fifteen years: Los Angeles Unified School District, Fairfax High School. Much of my work was devoted to the voice, articulation, projection, eye contact with the audience, and the speaker's strong need to convey his message. Physically, the speaker needs to restrict extraneous body movement and only use gesture when most effective and appropriate. I worked individually with each student though the class was present as audience.
I was a professional actor before I began teaching drama for fifteen years at Fairfax High School. Among the 20 plays I produced and directed were "The Miracle Worker," A Raisin in the Sun," and "A Chorus Line. Before receiving my Master's Degree from UCLA, I was was a teaching assistant in the musical theater department. I tutored Ms. Lynda Carter on one of her television movies, as well as appearing in three of them.
I am credentialed by the State of California to teach English and all its components (literature, creative writing, grammar).
