I have hundreds of hours of experience doing private tutoring in ESL and Mandarin Chinese, and years of classroom teaching experience that include teaching English and Business English at a university in China. For business people and other adults, I can help with individual or corporate trainings for those those traveling to China for fun or business, including those of you adopting Chinese children, and arrange customized, useful orientations for individuals or groups in advance of meetings with Chinese people or government officials.
I have a good rapport with kids and know how to make learning fun and effective! I work as a Substitute Teacher in the Pleasanton School District and Valley Christian Schools for all grade levels and subjects, as well as with Oakland Unified School District. I have worked as a Mandarin Chinese Teacher for grade levels K-11, including AP Mandarin, at a top-rated public charter school and have also worked in Chinese after school programs. There are some things that make me different from your typical Chinese or ESL teacher. I lived in Hong Kong from 1998 to 2000 and Kunming, China from 2000 to 2009, so I understand the difficulties of living in a different culture as well as learning a new language. It took years to understand the intricacies of Chinese culture, history and geography (including insights into geographic variations in accent and culture). There is an advantage to my insights and expertise, sometimes even over a native Chinese speaker, because I have the experience and perspective of dealing with Chinese people (including Chinese officials) as a non-Chinese person, so I can understand cultural situations and know how to resolve misunderstandings on BOTH sides.
While in China. I provided teaching sessions on a regular basis (about once a month) for visiting groups who came to China from around the world, for which I developed training materials, including customizable booklets to help them get around. I helped locals in China set up their own businesses which focused on orienting Westerners to China and teaching them language/culture lessons, and for this I created curricula and trained Chinese friends on how to use it. In addition, my wife and I adopted a Chinese son while in China, and, through the process, had to do all the complicated paperwork and negotiations with the Chinese officials entirely in Chinese language.

The rate listed is for teaching Chinese. I may negotiate for English and ESL tutoring depending on location and convenience. Group rates available.
Tim was a great help with my son in getting him ready for his Mandarin final. He has patience with kids and related well to him. My son said that an hour with Tim was worth a week in class. He learned a lot!
First lesson was excellent! We can count to 100 and learned several common phrases to work on this week. We look forward to our next lesson.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
