As part of his studies at the Frost School of Music, Devin learned skills such as arranging, orchestration, and music production, all which have helped him grow as a musician and teacher. His qualifications for teaching include piano and voice (classically trained regarding both skills), songwriting, ear training, and Music Theory. His approach to teaching is unique because he combines proper technique with a more modern, contemporary mindset, offering skills like self-accompaniment, learning interesting voicings for pop, musical theater, and jazz, understanding chord theory, and more.

Ear Training,

Ear Training

Under my professor Dan Strange, I learned about Jazz Theory, which incorporated intense ear training and chordal exercises. Studying at the Frost School has allowed me to understand differences in harmony, from augmented to modal mixture, and detecting what notes make up a specific voicing on a piano, for example. Ear training makes us better musicians because by identifying the chordal movement of a song, one can understand what makes a composition truly work.
General Music,

General Music

At the Frost School of Music, I had a diverse and knowledgeable education, covering topics ranging from Music Theory, Ear Training, Contemporary Piano, Music Production, Arranging, Orchestration, and more. I can gear my lesson plan toward any number of interests depending on the student, due to my eclectic musical background. Attending the Frost School and being seeped in music my entire life lends me to teaching General Music at a high level.

I'm a 2020 graduate from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, with a major in Film Scoring and a minor in Songwriting. I studied Contemporary Piano at this institution, learning Jazz, Classical, and Modern Music Theory. Songwriting

Studying under the Bruce Hornsby Creative American Music Program at the Frost School of Music, I learned about the song concepts of Anglo and Afro traditions, Vintage and Modern Pop Music, and 21st Century Lyric Writing. In June of 2020, my writing partner and I were accepted into the prestigious Johnny Mercer Foundation Songwriters Project with selections for our original musical, Hindsight. When teaching songwriting, I emphasize structure, attention to detail, commitment to clarity, and finding your own voice.
Voice (Music)

Voice (Music)

I have studied voice for over 10 years and have taught lessons for more than 5 years. Under the direction of Professor Willy Perez-Feria at the Frost School of Music, I learned new engaging ways to approach the voice, including properly lifting the soft palate and opening up the larynx. I will take a holistic approach with my students, working on technique as well as overall confidence and stage presence.

Great tutor

Devin worked with my son on his piano. Devin was really patient and thoughtful and really took time to ensure my son was getting the concepts. We were very happy.

Skilled and encouraging teacher

Devin is a great teacher! As someone with little to no signing experience, he was able to create a comfortable space for me to build confidence and explore my voice. He is incredibly musically gifted and has a wealth of knowledge he shares readily. I highly recommend Devin to both beginner and experienced singers alike!

Learned so much!

Devin is excited to teach piano, which makes him a fun and enthusiastic teacher. He was very engaging with my son. He taught my son and I so much and came prepared with flash cards, and worksheets. I definitely recommend him as a teacher and look forward to the next lesson.
