I have recently graduated from Western Washington University with a Bachelor's degree in Japanese with a teaching endorsement and my TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Certificate. I spent a year studying abroad in Nagoya, Japan, and I learned so much about the language and culture, and myself. My goal is to become a high school Japanese teacher after living in Japan for a few years either teaching English or otherwise. I am passionate about both subjects and about teaching. I have teaching experience with students in high schools and ESL programs in Washington, and completed my student teaching internship abroad in Hobart, Tasmania, where I planned and taught Japanese lessons to four 7th grade classes, two 8th grade classes, and one 9/10th grade combined class for a period of 11 weeks. I've also completed a 10-week TESOL practicum working with Japanese students studying English. Before that, I helped tutor students in Japan and India in English in a conversational context and planned and executed weekly ESL lessons with a group of three students. Overall, I am a very easy-going, amiable person. I enjoy teaching, and that makes a world of difference for both the tutor and the student.

Throughout the program, I completed multiple workshops and worked in classes with students from a variety of countries (including Saudi Arabia, South Korea, China, Japan, Mexico, and more) and at many different proficiency levels. My practicum was in a Japanese English class where I helped students to develop their English vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar through studying American history.

I have recently graduated with a B.A. in Japanese from Western Washington University, and my goal is to become a high school Japanese teacher. I've been studying it for over 8 years now. I spent a year living and studying in Nagoya, Japan, and it was the best year of my life. I've really developed a deep passion for the language and culture of Japan, and I can't imagine my life without it! Through my years of studying Japanese, I've been helping my peers understand grammar and study vocabulary, kanji, and whatever else they need through personal tutoring sessions. Because I have personally learned Japanese as a second language, I'm aware of the challenges it holds for English speakers and can explain concepts in a way that's easy to internalize. I've worked with many exchange students tutoring English as well, since I'm a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) minor, so I know a variety of learning strategies!

Japanese classes for kids

Hannah did an amazing job, she kept my kids engaged and I was very impressed with how much they learned on their first lesson. I highly recommend Hannah

Great Lesson

Another great lesson, adding more subject matter and vocabulary to new sentence structures. Getting into objects and colors with "this, that and that over there". Learning a whole lot each lesson!

Great job

Hannah was patient and spent a lot of time with our son quizzing him until he had it down pat.

24th Session - Putting it all together!

24th Session comment: Wow, really hitting on all cylinders now in my tutoring sessions with Hannah -- vocabulary, grammar, verb conjugation, scriptwriting/roleplaying, pronunciation, reading and writing in Japanese hiragana & katakana. Don't know if there's anything more elements we could work on, we're doing it all. The homework and tutoring sessions are an intense immersion into the language learning now, and yet it couldn't be more fun to learn a language than this. Very pleased with my progress, and looking forward to gaining rudimentary fluency by Springtime. Arigato gozaimusu, Hannah-san! ___________________________________________ 23rd session comment: My homework the past two session has been to write a role-play script using the vocabulary, grammar, and verb conjugation I've learned to date, and to write the script in hiragana and romaji. I've converted my home computer keyboard to be able to type in hiragana and katakana, so I'm learning my characters so much faster now that I'm typing the script in both hiragana and katakana this week in preparation of my homework for Friday's next session. We also read the script out loud, so I'm also working on my pronunciation along with everything else, it's really challenging to incorporate all facets of Japanese language learning into my homework and tutoring session, but I'm loving it and learning so much better and faster now. Hannah continues to be a joy to learn from and an inspirational teacher.

So helpful

I had to give a short introduction to a performing group traveling to Japan. Hannah helped me translate what I wanted to stay and helped me learn how to pronounce the words. She is an excellent teacher. I feel that I am thoroughly prepared for my presentation.
