About Aya

Hello! My name is Aya and I am a recent graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education where I received a master's in Education, Culture and Society. My coursework consisted of various theoretical and practical topics spanning Anthropology, Sociology, History and even Filmmaking!

Previously, I was a French and Music double major at Stanford University. I've spent a total of about 1.5 years living in France (combining my study abroad, teaching, research and course experiences) and love both the country and its language.

I am incredibly passionate about advising students on higher education opportunities. Navigating college and graduate school applications is difficult, and I would love the opportunity to help you through them! I was an admissions graduate assistant in my master's program and thus have a lot of experience guiding prospective students about their higher education choices.

Subject-specific Information:

Writing: I love to help with college/grad school personal statement writing. I have successfully helped people proofread and organize their statements. I love editing papers and helping people find ways to better their writing. I edit and produce content at an online magazine and have proofread/copyedited publications and presentations for research professors and supervisors.

French: I started learning French in high school and ended up a French major (and Music major) at Stanford University (10+ years of experience). I studied abroad in Paris for two quarters, conducted my own independent project there, took a seminar on Medieval France/Troubadour music in Southern France, and worked as an English assistant in Argenteuil, a suburb of Paris. I am not a native French speaker, but I have great conversational skills as well as reading/writing and would love to help you further your French skills! (I have an ACTFL official rating of Advanced French Proficiency) I also have a bunch of information on Paris and other French cities, so I would love to help with the cultural aspect of your learning journey.

Japanese: I grew up speaking Japanese at home and also attended a Japanese Language School for 12 years.

College Counseling: I have experience helping with grad school admissions at the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education. I was a graduate assistant in my master's program and interacted with prospective and admitted students frequently, helping them talk through their ideas and hopes for the future. I also volunteered as a college guidance mentor and worked with a high school senior through her college application process.

I absolutely love working individually with students and helping them realize their potential!

I would love to hear from you and look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

As someone who gained access to Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania, I am very familiar with the grueling task of applying to higher ed institutions. Furthermore, I served as a volunteer college counselor to a high school senior in Philadelphia while I was getting my master's. I also served as an admissions graduate assistant for my master's program, where I advised incoming students and prospective students on the application/grad school process. I love working with students and am passionate about college access and admissions.
