I believe that learning should be enjoyable, but also requires hard work. I teach by providing conceptual background, followed by hands-on activities, and culminating in assessments. The best way to learn is to acquire information and then challenge yourself to apply what you've learned. Therefore, I push my students to use what they've learned in everyday situations. I have taught community college and high school biology and marine science courses. However, I also love tutoring other subjects such as math, grammar, reading, and general science. I have a Master's degree in Biology and a Bachelor's degree in Marine Science, which has given me vast knowledge of all science-focused disciplines. As a tutor, I pride myself in not only teaching the subject required, but also in teaching study skills that can be used in additional subjects. Please feel free to contact me through WyzAnt with any questions or tutoring opportunities. I look forward to helping you expand your understanding of the world around you! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an undergraduate student, I got good grades but didn't have very good study skills. Once I got to graduate school, I struggled while other students excelled. This forced me to look into being organized, finding the best methods of studying, and prioritizing my time. Studies have shown that forcing one to recall information is a much better method of learning than simply reading and taking notes. I believe in using flashcards, creating practice tests, and forcing students to orally explain a topic.
