In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a certification in TESOL/TESL/TEFL. I currently teach reading, writing, grammar, and speaking to students from other countries who must learn English in order to apply to American universities. I tutored an ESL student for 1 1/2 years and train new ESL tutors for a Bay Area literacy program.
I worked with a tutoring program which targeted early learners. Many of my students were struggling in phonics and it was thrilling to see how strengthening their understanding of phonics improved their ability to read and comprehend.
I worked for 1 1/2 years for a tutoring company where I taught children to read and write. Most of the students I worked with were 5 to 12 years old. My focus with the younger students was phonics. I enjoy working with new readers because I love to watch the process of language acquisition and the sense of pride children achieve as they master reading. As a child, I struggled with reading, so I have an innate sense of compassion for young readers and make learning fun and easy.
