About Kellie

I graduated in May with an Elementary Education major and a Middle Level Math minor. I received my teaching license in K-6 and middle school math. My love for teaching and working with kids has grown since I was in middle school. I have tutored middle school students in math, taught lessons to sixth graders for 4-H, and been an instructional aide at an after-school daycare. The education program has prepared me for teaching children with a variety of needs using methods backed by research. During my field experience I tutored a struggling second grader in reading for a few months and learned the importance of direct instruction of reading strategies supported by modeling and independent practice. My field experience has also given me ample opportunity to apply the teaching strategies I learned in the program with a variety of students of different ages and with different needs.

I believe students should be actively participating in the lesson. When pupils are engaged, motivated, and responsible for their learning, they become autonomous learners who are encouraged to practice reflective thinking. The tasks and activities I use in lessons to help your student will be authentic and relate to students’ everyday lives so they are more likely to retain and recall the new information. Authentic tasks relate knowledge and skills to students’ experiences and prior knowledge. The most important aspect of tutoring is creating a good relationship with your student. Knowing your student provides direction for the lessons and an understanding of your student's prior knowledge, interests, strengths, and weaknesses. Watching a student progress, develop, and learn as a result of my efforts is a rewarding experience and an incredible responsibility. I believe with the research-backed methods, student-centered approach, and friendly, supportive environment I implement, I will help your student learn and progress to the best of his or her ability.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have been a dancer for 17 years and a ballet dancer for 13 years. I danced competitively at a studio and on the dance team in high school. The terms and movements of ballet have been ingrained in me after using them every week in practice.

Bible Studies

I was introduced to the bible at a very young age and studied it during my Catholic education at St. Wenceslaus School (grades K-8). I also taught at a vacation bible camp one summer and have been in a bible study group during my four years at college.

I took a Dreamweaver class in high school. I am able to create a functional and creative website using the program. At the end of the course I received a certificate proving my knowledge and skills with Dreamweaver. In the class I often explained and modeled tools and tips to my classmates.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been trained to teach K-6 in the education program at Winona State University. I will graduate in May and receive my license shortly after. The courses I took in the education program prepared me to teach math, science, social studies, reading, and writing in any grade K-6. I have also passed all of my MTLE tests.

I have been working on Macintosh computers for the last seven years. I understand how to find files, adjust computer settings, update software, common problems, connecting to the internet, sharing files, and how to use the applications efficiently. My knowledge has come from online research and conversations with my IT friends about my own issues and questions with Macintosh computers.

Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook has been a crucial tool for my education and occupation. I have learned how to navigate the many tools the software offers in order to efficiently organize, send, and receive emails. My knowledge and skills include creating folders to organize emails, creating an automated signature, searching people and emails, joining or creating groups, adding favorites, creating automated messages, and automatically forwarding messages to another email address.

Photography has been a passion of mine since I was about 10 when I started using my mom's camera to take pictures. I have taken multiple classes, researched online, and read books about tips on photography. I currently own two Polaroid cameras and a large Canon camera that I know how to use. I understand a majority of the terms and skills needed to create the desired effect in a photograph.

I took daily piano lessons for ten years and continue to play. I know to fluently read music and all of the keys and pedals on a piano. When tutoring piano I would use a series of books to develop certain skills that are useful to become an advance pianist.

I participated in softball for seven years. After being coached for this long by both my school coach and my family, who is big into softball and baseball, I know all of the rules. Technique plays a large part in how successful someone is at softball and is an aspect I would focus a lot on while tutoring. Techniques such as how to hold a bat, keeping your eye on the ball, not lifting your head when swinging, using both hands to stop a grounder, sliding, stealing, etc.

Special Needs

I am qualified to teach special needs students because I received special education training as an elementary and middle school teacher in my program. This training has included researching and implementing strategies for students with higher needs in real-world classrooms. Some of these strategies include visual aids, a quieter environment, breaking down the problem into parts, teaching study skills, providing explicit oral instruction, shortening the activities, using cues, questions, and organizers, and providing options for the way the student wants to complete a task. After thousands of hours working in schools and with my own tutoring students I have used many of these strategies, on an individual basis, that have proven to be more effective for students with special needs.

I have been swimming since I was three. My sister and I were both competitive swimmers. I have knowledge of the technique and tips for breast stroke, freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, and medley.
