Bio

As someone with 15 years experience as a college level instructor of logic, critical thinking and analytical writing, I bring something different to my English tutoring and exam prep. In fact, I’d like to think I teach my students exactly the kinds of intellectual skills they will need for their academic futures.

Whatever else it might entail, being ready for college requires that you are a skillful processor of information. When you think about it, isn’t that mostly what we do in school?...

When you think about it, isn’t that mostly what we do in school? We take in information by listening and reading. We reformulate and expand that information by creatively analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating its content. Finally, we contribute to the web of information by expressing our own thoughts in speech or writing.

Reading, reasoning, and writing — what could be more elementary than that? Perhaps not much, but neither can anything be more complex. What you are asked to do in college is to process information at the highest levels.  The right tutor can give you the foundation for getting there.

All of my students learn how to: confidently locate the main point of a passage; determine the rhetorical elements of a text that are crucial for interpretation; use context to figure out meanings of unknown words; analyze complex argumentative texts;  read actively by using textual marking methods, understand the rules of grammar in a way that is simple and memorable; properly structure their sentences, paragraphs, and essays; construct a proper thesis so that it adequately addresses the question at issue; develop and present logically compelling lines of reasoning; employ effective rhetorical strategies to introduce their essays in ways that captivate the reader’s attention; and craft conclusions that creatively clarify and reassert their main points.

In short, I don't just prep my students for their exams -- I teach them the very skills they will be using during their four years of college.

Of course, standardized tests such as the ACT and SAT create their own problems. Too often, bright students underperform on these exams relative to their other academic accomplishments.

That's why I also teach my students essential test-taking skills, such as how to: manage time during the test; recognize and anticipate different types of questions; apply rules-of-thumb for solving questions of specific types; develop a panic strategy in order to salvage a section that is going poorly, use visually-based skimming techniques; know when to guess, and, if so, what sorts of answers are likely or unlikely to be the right answer; employ specialized strategies for slower readers who might have a hard time finishing in the allotted time.

Whatever it takes to beat the exam, they will be ready for it!

Best of all, since I am an independent tutor working one-on-one, I don't have to adhere to any rigid curriculum. Rather, I adapt my teaching to individual needs. I pay attention to how and why my students choose their answers and not just what they choose.  This allows me to be very efficient at helping my students improve, regardless of where they begin.

I have been tutoring the SAT and ACT since 2004, and I will soon be publishing a co-authored book on the SAT. I may not be the cheapest tutor on Wyzant, but I tutor at the very highest level. In fact, I have worked for companies that charge over 50% more for my services than I am asking here.

However you choose to prepare, I wish you the best of luck on your test!
