About Shival

I got my BSc in mathematics and computer science from Caltech, one of the top technical schools in the world. I graduated with the Ryser Scholarship, a prestigious award given to three Caltech students each year for academic excellence in math. While at Caltech, I tutored many of my peers in math, physics, and computer science, both formally and informally, and also got some teaching experience from TAing introductory math and computer science classes. I served as the head TA for Math 0, an introductory math class that helps incoming students acclimate to the high level of mathematical rigor at Caltech.

When I was tutoring, my classmates noted that I was good at helping them learn material that they found difficult, breaking complicated concepts down into simple explanations that were easy to follow. Students liked that I tailored my teaching to their level of understanding and that they felt assured that I would never talk down to them or think that their questions were dumb.

Although you wouldn’t expect it, many students at Caltech were insecure about their abilities in math and science (especially in math), and I did my best during my time there to counter those beliefs by showing them that they were capable of doing and enjoying their coursework, even if it was very “abstract” and mathematical. Through very clear explanations of the fundamental concepts in math and science, and lots of encouragement, I hope to do the same for the students whom I tutor.

In High School, I earned 5s on the AP tests for Calculus BC, Physics B, Computer Science, Chemistry, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, American History, and European History. I was a full National Merit Scholar, earned perfect scores on the SAT Physics II and SAT Math II subject tests, and received a 2390 out of 2400 on the SAT. So I can help you prepare for APs and the SAT (trust me, I remember what it’s like).

I am a native English speaker, born and raised in California, and have experience working with middle school, high school, and college students. I am also interested in working with adults. If you are interested in working with me, please send me a message so we can discuss your learning goals and how I can best help!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

In order to graduate from Caltech with a degree in math, having a total command of the concepts in algebra was absolutely necessary.

Now I'm happy to share my knowledge with others. Through patient, step-by-step lessons, I can help students who are struggling with algebra gain confidence in the material and can help with homework and test prep. I also can push algebra students who are looking for a challenge, exposing them to more advanced concepts and ideas.

Algebra 2

In order to graduate from Caltech with a degree in math, having a total command of the concepts in algebra 2 was absolutely necessary. Now I'm happy to share my knowledge with others. Through patient, step-by-step lessons, I can help students who are struggling with algebra 2 gain confidence in the material and can help with homework and test prep. I also can push algebra 2 students who are looking for a challenge, exposing them to more advanced concepts and ideas.

Calculus

As a math major at Caltech, I became an expert in calculus, using it daily in areas as diverse as physics, neuroscience, and political science.

Even in high school, I obtained a solid foundation in calculus, taking and excelling in AP Calculus BC, multivariable calculus, and differential equations.

I have always loved explaining concepts in calculus and can provide supplementary lessons and also help with homework and studying for tests. Since calculus is so fundamental to how the world works, I try to make learning calculus intuitive and fun, instead of a chore.

Differential Equations

I took differential equations classes in high school and in college at Caltech, one of the top colleges in math in the world, and attained an expertise in the field that has allowed me to participate in advanced scientific research, including neuroscience research at the Allen Institute for Brain Science on DiPDE, a differential equations simulator for large populations of neurons.

But I don't just work with experts. During my time at Caltech, I tutored some of my fellow students in differential equations. One of them said about their experience, "Shival is a very patient tutor who thinks that no question is too dumb to ask. He is very good at breaking down complex ideas in a very understandable and intuitive way."

If you are having trouble with differential equations, I look forward to working with you so we can boost your confidence in the material and test scores, and explore the world of differential equations together.

Physics

As a graduate of Caltech with a degree in math, I have a clear and comprehensive understanding of physics that I love to share with others. At Caltech, I tutored many of my peers in physics, and, in high school, I was one of the officers of the physics research club.

Additionally, in high school, I received a 5 on the AP Physics B exam and an 800 on the SAT II Physics subject test and can help students with high school physics as well.

Precalculus

In order to graduate from Caltech with a degree in math, having a total command of the concepts in precalculus was absolutely necessary.

Now I'm happy to share my knowledge with others. Through patient, step-by-step lessons, I can help students who are struggling with precalculus gain confidence in the material and can help with homework and test prep. I also can push precalculus students who are looking for a challenge, exposing them to more advanced concepts and ideas.

SAT Math

As a former full National Merit Scholar and as someone who achieved a 2390 out of 2400 on the SAT, I know what an SAT test-taker needs to succeed: hard work, good test-taking strategies, and confidence in their ability to succeed, especially at SAT Math!

Math genius!

Brilliant tutor! Shival is highly skilled, patient and expert in math. He helped me with AP Calculus and taught me how to solve integrals, limits and continuity much more clearer than my own teacher. He shared and gave me his notes on Calculus helping me understand the concepts in addition to learning how to solve problems- I highly recommend Shival!
