About Anne

I recently completed my PhD and am currently working as an educator in various Los Angeles charter schools. I spent the last five years in the United Kingdom pursing graduate studies at the University of Oxford (International Relations) and King's College London (Defense Studies). Previously I lived, worked and studied in Washington, D.C. where I attended George Washington University (International Affairs major with minors in German and Political Science) and worked as a defense contractor.

I have extensive teaching and tutoring experience. I was even a tutor as a high school student! More recently, I taught professional military officers at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the UK and first year undergraduates in the War Studies department of King's College London. Both had heavy emphases on writing and study skills. I also worked as a Graduate Mentor for undergraduates at Merton College, Oxford in the famous Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) program, working one-on-one with students to help them improve their writing skills.

As an interdisciplinary researcher and teacher, I am very flexible about the type of lessons offered. Options include:
- Help with subject matter at all levels (elementary, middle, high, college) in history, social studies/science, political science, international relations, as applicable
- Test preparation for AP Comparative Government and Politics, AP US Government and Politics, AP US History, AP World History
- Test preparation for the CBEST (for teachers)
- How to write an essay for middle school, high school or college (elements of an essay, crafting an argument, proper citation and essays in timed test situations)
- Bad grade on an essay? I can help diagnose any problems and improve your next submission

This list is not exhaustive! Contact me and we can get creative! I also offer a discount for multiple students/study groups. I'm also available for same-day phone, skype, FaceTime and online tutoring.

Please feel free to get in touch and ask any questions, no pressure. Thanks for reading!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

CBEST

I passed the CBEST in January, obtaining the following scores: Reading (80), Mathematics (68) and Writing (75). I feel confident that I could tutor others in the types of skills and questions required by the examination. I also have extensive experience in test-taking in general, including the SAT test, SAT II, Advanced Placement, and GRE.

Government & Politics

I have extensive experience in researching, teaching and working in government and politics. I successfully passed the AP US Government and Politics and AP Comparative Government and politics examinations as a high school student. I graduated summa cum laude from the George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs, where I undertook coursework in US government, US politics and international politics. After college, I worked as a defense contractor at the Pentagon in the field of arms control. And as a graduate student, I successfully completed a master's degree in international relations at Oxford University, and I am currently finishing a PhD in Defense Studies via King's College London (resident in California).

Political Science

I have a minor in political science from George Washington University, and my subsequent educational experience included aspects of political science.

Social Studies

I have extensive educational experience in social studies/social science, including all three of the degree programs that I have undertaken (International Affairs, International Relations and Defense Studies). My BA and PhD studies have been heavily interdisciplinary in core social studies subjects, including history, government/civics and political science. I have tutored and taught undergraduate students in politics and interdisciplinary "war" studies, which was heavily social science focused. I could confidently handle these subjects at an elementary/middle/high school level.

Study Skills

I have experience teaching study skills. At King's College London, I was a Teaching Assistant on a course that taught general writing and study skills to incoming undergraduate students. Topics and skills included writing pieces of different lengths, taking notes, studying, time management, and other necessary study skills. I also covered study skills as a Graduate Mentor at Merton College, Oxford. The fundamentals of these skills are transferrable to all grade levels.

Writing

I have taught and tutored writing and general study skills at Oxford University and King's College London. But the skills I emphasize are applicable to all levels of writing: organizing an essay, crafting an argument, style, grammar, referencing (including the use of referencing software), avoiding plagiarism, and writing essays under timed test conditions.

Knowledgable

Anne is very knowledgeable and really knows her stuff. She is very clear and concise, which helped me understand a difficult topic that I was struggling with before we met. She was also available to help me at short notice.
