About Rebecca

Hello!
My name is Rebecca. I am a mother of four children that range in age from 6 months to 16 years of age. I am very involved in their education and enjoy working with students of all ages, but children hold a special place in my heart. I use the AVK teaching method. This means that I incorporate auditory, visual and kinesthetic elements in my lessons and tutoring. I find this to be an especially effective method with people that don't learn in the traditional manner. Below, I have outlined information about each subject that I offer tutoring in.

Anatomy:
My love of anatomy began at a very early age. I was (and am) fascinated by the way bodies are put together and how they work. To this day, I am very curious about the human body. I peruse anatomy texts in my free time. I teach groups of neuromuscular therapy students at cadaver labs once a month. I bring years of textbook knowledge and practical application to the table and am really excited to work with people that are struggling with anatomy. My goal is to help students find the body as fascinating as I do.

Study Skills:
Because I utilize the AVK method in my teaching (remember, that stands for: auditory, visual and kinesthetic), I have a number of skills that I have compiled to assist people in learning how to study. It never ceases to amaze me that a person can go through 12 years of basic education without anyone ever showing them how to study. As a successful teacher, I have to know my stuff inside and out. That involves a lot of studying. I get a lot of satisfaction out of sharing my methods with my students and seeing the difference in their grades.

Massage and Miscellaneous:
I've been teaching at a prominent massage school in the heart of Los Angeles for three years. Currently, most of what I teach is musculoskeletal anatomy, couples massage, infant massage and neuromuscular therapy. The latter entails quite a few aspects, such as assessment and charting. The subjects I am most versed in are English, Earth Science, Anatomy, Physiology, Kinesiology and Pathology. I often run study labs after classes and tutor students in a range of subjects from shiatsu to reflexology to reading to basics of traditional Chinese medicine.

In summation, all of my educational experiences have led me to an interesting mix of specialties which I am passionate about for different reasons. I believe success comes from interest in the subject matter at hand. It would be an honor for me to help you find excitement in the subjects with which you are struggling. Please contact me to learn more and schedule some tutoring sessions. I so look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

I am a neuromuscular therapist by trade and have been working in the massage field since 2003. I teach anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and pathology at a prominent massage school in the heart of Los Angeles. I utilize the Acland Anatomy video series in my tutorials. I draw upon a deep understanding of anatomy based on my cadaver lab experiences as well as my practical, hands-on experience with the human body.

Hard Of Hearing

I have had the opportunity to work with many populations in my time as an educator. First and foremost, the preservation of dignity is always my goal. I have had success working with hard-of-hearing students (as well as students with auditory processing deficiencies) at the National Holistic Institute for the last three years.

When working with deaf or hard-of-hearing students, I use more visual and kinisthetic tools. I make more eye contact and write things down. While I do not speak American Sign Language, I have mastered the skill of non-verbal communication.

Nutrition

I teach nutrition in the Advanced Neuromuscular Therapy Program at a Holistic Institute. I am well versed in the anatomy and physiology of the digestive system and have a basic understanding of the role the brain plays in sending hunger and satiety signals. I also teach about macronutrients (carbs, fats and proteins), how they are broken down and absorbed, and the role vitamins and minerals play in how the body functions. The subject matter I teach also relates to cellular respiration and exercise science.

Physiology

I teach anatomy and physiology to students of the massage and neuromuscular therapy programs at the National Holistic Institute in Studio City. I use interactive methods and fun analogies to make subject matter memorable and easy to understand.

Public Speaking

As an educator, I understand that public speaking is a phobia for most people. I received training in how to teach public speaking skills to Massage Therapists and Health Educators in 2014 at the National Holistic Institute. I have taught public speaking skills in a classroom setting for three years. The main skills you will gain in learning about public speaking from me are the following:

1) Voice projection and enunciation (so everyone you are speaking to can hear and understand you).
2) Proper posture (to project an air of confidence and authority - and avoid passing out).
3) Mirror/on-camera exercises (to understand the image you are putting forth).
4) Viewing video footage of various types of public speakers (politicians, motivational speakers, Ted talks, stand-up comics, etc.) to discover the common elements between successful public speakers.
5) Performing a speech to a group of the student's choice (practical application of theory).

Study Skills

I host study labs on various subjects an average of two afternoons per week. In my teaching, I utilize the AVK (auditory, visual, kinesthetic) method. When I study, I use AVK to help me organize and remember my materials. I teach students that went through grades K-12 with no study skills to speak of how to study, with great success.

Good explainer

Helpful, quick to give examples and show me how to remember certain words. I suggest her for physiology!! Nice sense of humor and integrates the real world with the curriculum.
