Western Washington University (History)
National University (Master's)
I have a Master’s degree in education and I have been substitute teaching for about two years. I can teach a variety of subjects to diverse types of students, while developing a great rapport. I am always searching for ways to connect what I am teaching to the student’s preferred method of learning.
My greatest passion lies in teaching the subject of history. History has deep meaning for me as an educator and as a human being. Bringing history alive enables you to create your own meaning. When you comprehend meaning, you discover your place in the interconnected human story. History provides a real framework to view the past or present while developing your own ideas, passions, and ethics. For me, history is the most dynamic and important subject that one can experience. It is, quite literally, the story of everything.
Because of my passion for this subject, I have developed broad knowledge. My experience includes U.S. history (pre-Colombian to present), European history (pre-Roman to present), African history (as it relates to colonialism and independence), and Asian history (specifically pre-modern to modern Japanese history [some Chinese and Indian]). I could discuss most of these subjects from memory. I also do my own research and reading on many sub-categories, (such as the Black Plague, the Constitution, the U.S. war with Mexico, the U.S. civil war, slavery, witch hunts, etc). I excel in geography and placing the topic within the proper context of time and place. If you need to relate to the material, we will find a way to make it happen.
Are you interested in experiencing history in a way that lets you relate to the subject matter? Together, we will find a way to keep it meaningful and interesting. We will focus on ways for you to retain the information and apply what you learn. If this sound like the way to go for you please contact me. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
