About Richard

My name is Richard, and I teach 5th grade at a small charter school in St. Paul, MN. As a tutor, I'm proud to be able to draw upon both my time in the classroom as well as other teaching experiences to serve my students. For example, in May 2014, I graduated with a B.A. in Sociology from Columbia University in New York City. I have experience as a public classroom teacher, small group tutor, and one-on-one tutor. Besides academic tutoring, I have also worked with students on college applications, test preparation, and social/organizational skills. Lastly, I am also very comfortable tutoring in many subjects across different grade levels

As a tutor, my focus is on answering my students' specific needs. This means that I am happy to work with whatever materials/curriculum that my students, their families, or their schools provide. I also firmly believe that my students should understand deeper-level concepts and make their own connections about learning, and my work will always reflect that. I am also happy to be flexible with learning styles, and I like to use manipulatives, drawings, and stories to make difficult ideas come to life.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I teach a self-contained 5th grade classroom at a City School, a small charter school in St. Paul, MN. I am a licensed teacher, working on my M.A. in Elementary Curriculum and Instruction. In my classroom, I teach literacy, math, and science. I work with Common Core ELA and MN Math Standards.

Elementary Math

I work full-time as a 5th grade classroom teacher, and I take the lead on planning math lessons for the entire 5th grade at my school. Thus, I'm very familiar with both math standards and learning strategies. I incorporate lots of manipulatives, real-world stories and examples to help my students make their own mathematical connections. I am a big fan of inquiry-based learning in math, and I push my students to discover rules and shortcuts on their own.

Sociology

I have a BA in Sociology from Columbia College, Columbia University. I took courses that covered theoretical foundations of sociology, practical research methods, as well as specific topics such as the sociology of education. Moreover, I have experience in classes that are in Sociology's academic genealogy (comparative ethnic studies, anthropology, philosophy).
