In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have been a mate painter in the motion picture industry for over 20 years. I started as an apprentice to Matthew Yuricich working on the matte paintings for the films "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and "Blade Runner." That was the period when matte painting were done on masonite and glass with oil paints and acrylics. Since 1990, I have done all my matte paintings digitally using Adobe Photoshop. I first learned photography in 1960 when I had the job of photographer for my high school newspaper and yearbook. This required not just learning principles of correct exposure technique and composition, but also the darkroom techniques required for processing and printing. I have used many of these basic photographic principles in my work in the motion picture and television industry, and added to my knowledge, learning the basics of optics, perspective, color science, and most recently, digital image processing.
