In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been speaking Spanish for 17 years and studying it for 24. As a Spanish teacher of five years, I have lived and travelled in Spain, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Chile, Uruguay, and El Salvador. In the summers, I am an Adventure Travel Leader with a company that takes high school students abroad to live with families and perform community service work.
It's hard to come up with which kind of writing I like to teach better: essay writing, where kids are figuring out what they think and feel about something they've read? Or creative writing, where they're exploring their imaginations and playing with language skills? Or college essay writing, where kids are examining their own experience and who they think they are? Which is my favorite - I don't think I have one!
