About Christina

Hi there! Thank you for your interest in having me as a tutor!

MY BACKGROUND: I earned a BS in Chemistry from CalPoly San Luis Obispo. I have a Teaching Credential in Chemistry - Highly qualified CA Chemistry, and I have near completion of a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction - CSUDH (two more classes to complete)
I have worked in industry and I have been a teacher in a California high school and middle school. Currently I am writing science curriculum for a charter organization.

TUTORING BACKGROUND: I have worked as a tutor, teacher's assistant and small group instructor throughout my college career..... dating back to my Junior College days (1993- Yikes!). Because I am one of those students who had to work to support myself and pay my own way through college, I relied on tutoring/TA etc for my survival. Fortunately for me, I never had a shortage of students! I get great feedback and good word of mouth referrals from my students. Through my tutoring experience, my educational training, and my own learning process I have learned many ways to teach the same concepts. This is important because each person learns in a different way. I do my best to adapt to your learning style!

Are you wondering how you should choose a tutor? Should you choose based on cost? Do you go for the least expensive tutor or the most expensive tutor or somewhere in between? Maybe you will decide based on people's educational background -- Did the tutor go to a prestigious university?

The truth is- all of these, and more, should be part of your decision making process. In my experience, the most important factor in having a successful tutoring relationship is the compatibility with teaching style and personality with you and your tutor. I am confident in my knowledge of subject and my ability to explain and teach tough concepts, however, I won't work for everyone. The only way to truly know if a tutor is going to work for you is to try them out! I hope you give me a call... but most of all... I hope you are able to get the help you need and be successful in your studies. Deep down.. I hope that you too will learn to LOVE chemistry! (I know... maybe a bit much to ask for.)

Algebra, Pre-Algebra, Integrated Math 1 and 2
MATH STUDENTS: I haven't forgotten about you! I enjoy math deeply and I am good at teaching math because frankly, a lot of the problems students have with chemistry and science usually boils down to problems with, well, MATH. One of the struggles I have had with math is finding the relationships to real life .. or even to other subjects. Many times students come to chemistry and I am going over calculation problems, I hear them say that they have NEVER learned how to do this type of math. Usually it is just basic algebra. I say JUST... but let's be real! When you don't understand it is never JUST algebra. The fact is that students have been taught, and sometimes even done well, on the same concepts in their math class - but they were never taught math in the context of real applications. In science we use math as the language of science. If you learned how to solve an algebraic expression but you can only do it when it is written one particular way - well I would argue that you haven't truly learned the concept. I know this because I was always good at math in school. I enjoyed it. Except word problems. I always struggled with those... Sometimes I would get them right and sometimes I wouldn't and I really never knew which way it would go. I finally learned how to THINK through problems through my studies in chemistry. So... if you struggle with math... give me a call. Let's see if we might be a fit!

MY PASSION: I LOVE teaching chemistry. From the very first day in my first introductory chemistry class, I KNEW I had found my passion and, well, the rest is history. I majored in chemistry in college and while my career objectives have changed throughout the years, my decision to major in chemistry has never faltered.

Now, I realize most people don't LOVE chemistry and if you are struggling you may in fact DISLIKE chemistry. This saddens me deeply... but I do understand! Hey.. When I began my studies in chemistry I struggled a bit and often times things do take me longer to learn than for some other people... so again... I understand. The fact that chemistry did not come easy to me at first makes me a BETTER teacher and tutor. How do I know this? Students have given me this feedback.

My goal is for you to succeed and gain confidence in your own abilities! Everyone can be successful in learning science and math. EVERYONE! I hope that if you are struggling and you have lost confidence or even if you just need a little extra help to improve your scores you will give me a call and see if I might be a good fit for you as a tutor!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
