About Samuel

Hello! My name is Samuel, a recent graduate of UCLA with a B.S. in chemistry / materials science. I am currently pursuing my M.S. in materials science and engineering at Stanford University. In high school, I tutored math subjects from algebra to precalculus, both during the school years and during summers. Near the end of high school, I decided to take teaching one step further and spent one summer as a volunteer English teacher in Pingtung, Taiwan. My passion for helping others learn didn't stop there. In college, as a member and later as Internal Vice President of the Student Members of the American Chemical Society, I volunteered at various elementary schools, running experiments to teach students about chemistry in an exciting environment not limited to dry ice fog, homemade Dippin' Dots, and rags that gave the illusion of burning.

Tutoring is something I actually enjoy; it is much more than a standard job to get some extra cash. One of my greatest joys is to help others understand my favorite subjects, notably math and chemistry. I tutor because I want to help students learn material, not just enough information needed to pass a test. The latter is only temporary, while the former stays much longer. In addition, tutoring keeps me up to date with K-12 education even long after I have finished high school; that way, I can try to understand where students struggle and why.

I have tutored math in high school and as a summer job to students of various ages, from K-12.

Each student is different, and I am more than willing to cater to any student's needs. I am also very flexible in terms of lesson appointments; just communicate with me. Also, I will most likely be able to answer any question along the lines of, "When will this be useful?"

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I tutored 5 students in chemistry last year (4 Honors, 1 AP). 3 of them were in Cupertino, 1 in Palo Alto, and 1 in Atherton.
