About Virginia

ESL Tutoring was designed to help adult learners of all abilities improve their English reading, writing, and speaking. Tutoring is facilitated by a San Francisco native with both a Master's degree in Counseling and in Business Administration, and over seven years experience in tutoring. Students include: non-native speakers; college and graduate scholars; relocation engineers; and global business executives who gain vocabulary, fluency, and speaking confidence in a few short weeks for use in both business and social situations.

ESL for Adults will strengthen your grammar, develop your reading comprehension and written analysis, and achieve the speaking confidence that can make a difference in your presentations. In addition, tutoring can improve your study habits and meet your goals in a custom program that fits your schedule and budget. Sessions are given with a passion for students and a desire to help you gain success. Additional services include: resume writing, career development, and life coaching.

One-hour sessions are convenient, in-person or virtual, and are supported by years of experience in communications, counseling, and English instruction.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I received an MBA from Golden Gate University in San Francisco. My career includes working for corporations for 15 years in Sales, Marketing, and Development. I was responsible for long range and mid-term planning, budgeting, sales forecasting, hiring and performance reviews, administration and operations for small and mid-size businesses in New York and San Francisco in publishing and arts and entertainment.

Career Development

In 2003 I received an MS in Counseling, College and Career and as a graduate intern I worked as a teacher, counselor, and advisor at the College of San Mateo. In this capacity I helped students one-to-one and in group sessions. In the classroom I taught Career Assessment and Job Placement. In addition I worked at the advising center and counseled for course planning, transfer, and graduation.

English

I have worked as an English tutor since 2000. My work is with middle and high school students where I provide private instruction in their home or at a library. For this group I support a combination of Common Code requirements, student homework, and school projects. I introduce new vocabulary, work on reading comprehension, and writing skills. For this work I draw on my grammar school background, three years of teaching community college students, and my work as a tutor during my undergraduate program.

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching ESL to students and adults since 2012. For three years I was part of an English immersion program in Ireland, Spain, and Germany that taught intensive English to local teachers and businessmen. A native San Franciscan, I now work in Silicon Valley teaching college students and corporate employees, from beginner to advanced. My ESL students come from all over the world: China, Japan, Korea, Brazil, Chile, India, Russia, and many European countries. My employers praise me for my ability to help students assimilate the American language and culture; my counseling background supports me in this process. I am dedicated to helping my students achieve their language goals and I look forward to the next opportunity to teach ESL.

Grammar

My background includes eight years of private grammar school, which is the foundation of my grammar work. In addition, I have been working as an English tutor since my undergraduate school years. Currently, I serve as an English tutor for middle and high school students, and work as an ESL instructor for students and adults. Both ESL teaching and English language tutoring reinforce my grammar capability.

Marketing

My marketing career included market research, marketing planning and strategy, advertising, PR, promotion, and event marketing, brand management, and channel marketing. I was involved with product launches and re-launches and supported retail and trade shows. I used my expertise to create data systems for CRM and to maximize SEO. I developed both web-based and email marketing, and designed mobile applications. From 2008-14 I was responsible for sales and marketing for a $4mil art organization.

Proofreading

I've just completed work with three different students that needed help with proofreading their papers and presentation slides/speaker notes. I'd be happy to do the same for you.

Public Speaking

As part of my marketing communications responsibility I frequently coached senior executives for the media. I relied on my BA in Theatre Arts to support this work as well as PR background and experience. Currently I coach senior executives for speeches and presentations. I also use debate speech for work with students and adults.

Writing

I have been working as an English tutor since 2000. My students are middle and high school and need basic support for required writing. In addition, I work with college students to proof and editor their papers. My business communications background provides me with excellent skills for tutoring writing.
