I love making an intimidating subject approachable to students. I've received feedback that I make students feel more comfortable and confident about learning math. I agree strongly with psychologist Carol Dweck's theories about growth mindset: that success has to little to do with inherent "smartness" and comes from effort, practice, and learning from errors.
I prefer to allow students to explore multiple ways to solve a problem. I believe that reasoning out a formula is far better than memorizing it. In a good tutoring session, the student will do 50% or more of the talking, discovering the solution rather than being told how to get there. I understand that math is about clear communication and that a 'right answer' has no value if it's not well communicated.
I am comfortable tutoring students in middle school and above.
I'm an experienced STEM tutor from the the area. While tutoring in Palo Alto, I've seen my students achieve their learning goals including desired SAT scores, placement exam scores. I have conducted over 2000 short sessions in math while working at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz as well as group sessions and longer one-on-one sessions in most STEM subjects. I'm currently working on an MS in Computer Science from Stanford. I plan on making teaching a significant part of my career. I earned a bachelor's an Aerospace Engineering in 2012 from UCLA. I worked as a mechanical engineer in for 2 years in Palo Alto and currently do consulting as a mechanical analyst. I love making an intimidating subject approachable to students. Sal has been working with our daughter in both math and physics. She is very approachable and warm, and clearly has a passion for math and science. Our daughter appreciates that Sal doesn't beat around the bush, and can quickly figure out the bits and pieces of the concepts that are tripping her up. I always hear a little laughter when Sal is tutoring, and that's always a great sign.
Sal was easy to work with and even after a first meeting, my daughter said, "I think this is going to be really helpful." What a start!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 2 years experience tutoring Algebra 2 through a College Math Learning Center. I have 3 years experience tutoring Algebra and other levels of math privately. I have received excellent feedback directly from students, as well as the staff at the learning center.
I have 2 years experience tutoring calculus through a College Math Learning Center. I have also tutored calculus privately. I have experience using calculus in science applications and in more advanced math classes such as differential equations.
I have 2 years experience tutoring Geometry through a College Math Learning Center. I've received excellent feedback from students and staff at the learning center. I've also had 1 year experience tutoring geometry privately. I'm comfortable integrating geometry with subjects like physics, engineering, and art.
I have used MATLAB heavily in six of my upper-division courses during my undergraduate degree at UCLA. I use MATLAB on a daily basis at my current job as a mechanical engineer in R&D. I write original scripts as well as use and modify scripts from my peers. I have been employed at my current job for two years using MATLAB for most of that time.
I have 2 years experience tutoring Precalculus through the Cabrillo College Math Learning Center. I have experience tutoring precalculus for Gunn high school students as well as several local private schools. I'm able to link precalculus to calculus and apply it to science and statistics.
